400d OM656 Turbo issue (E400d All Terrain 2019)

If it was me, even if this was 'being sorted free of charge under warranty for 2 years', as soon as that fault had been identified, I would have made (or bought, depending on the shape, size and complexity of said offending pipe) a stainless steel section myself. I would imagine a hose or connector specialist could have knocked up something very professional for around the £100-200 mark.

I know that's not the principled outcome that should be expected, but it was pretty obvious by the inability of Merc to take affirmative action to follow through on their own, first sensible suggestion, that the processes and internal procedures in Merc were going to be a PITA and potential blocker to good sense.

Thank you @MeanRedSpider for detailing your journey. I have no doubt this will help people out.

Yup - ultimately I could do this but this would completely cut myself off from any ownership from M-B and the dealer. I also discussed a similar option with the service manager and he thought that this was what M-B would propose or supply. They didn’t - which makes us wonder if there’s something we are missing.

I’ve just started a thread about rejecting the car in the General channel. 2 months in and they’re still haggling between M-B and the dealer. It such a PITA. After over 20 years, I’m done with M-B. Any company that doesn’t take ownership for their products isn’t one I want any part of.

Just to close out this thread, I rejected the car and haggled over the value and got something back that was almost fair.

The Mercedes factory fix seemed to have worked (turbo power still there) but the juddering gear change after an hour or two of driving is still there.

That was less than 3 weeks ago and the car is now on AutoTrader with a Manchester dealer and already reserved. YK19USJ if you are interested. I’m sure the juddering gear change fault is still there - some poor sod will pick up where I left off. I looked at getting another E-Class estate but there are almost nothing at 300d or more powerful in my price range (I blame SUVs) so I’ve gone (sorry) after 25 years of E-Classes to a 530d: not as comfortable, better driver experience, sounds better, not as sophisticated.
