468 miles to a tank from a CLK 320 convertible

Mercedes CLK 320 W208
Being 200kgs heavier than the coupe I was astonished at the 468 miles achieved on a full tank from my w208 clk 320 convertible which took me from Folkstone to Amsterdam and back without having to re-fuel.

If I'd had further to go I think I would've reached 500 but unfortunately the stop start traffic at Calais to get onto the train meant I had to fill up again.

Surprisingly good aren't they?

This was my 320 clk convertable after a run.
Note the average speed.

Around town they aren't so great, understandably. However on longer runs i'm regularly seeing high 30's.

My average speed on this trip includes driving in central Amsterdam and parking etc.

Cruise control was set to 72 for most of the way back as we were in no rush.

High 30s isn't off big diesel territory

Yes indeed, even though this was a largely motorway run, this is still an impressive result.

Yep, I could regularly see decent mpg like this in my 208 320 coupe. Didn't matter much if you weren't hanging around, 70-90mph slowing and accelerating in traffic on motorway runs never hurt the fuel economy too much.

Come off a steady cruise in a CLS and the fuel economy falls off pretty rapidly. Guess there is a price to pay for a huge body size and fat tyres!

Thats still pretty good.

I got 600 miles from 30 litres on the Smart CDI when I worked at it which is probably about as good as it gets for a production road car at the moment.

Exactly right...doesn't tend to fluctuate too much.

I would've been intruiged to see what the MPG was for just the motorway section of the driving.

I averaged 37.6mpg on the return journey from Amsterdam to Calais over 235 miles. It took around half an hour to get out of the city so wouldn't surprise me if it was closer to 40mpg.

I'm not normally one to try and max the number of miles I get from a tank but on this occasion I really wanted to see if I could do the round trip without refuelling. Was quite satisfying! Also mananged to avoid the €1.88 the motorway service stations were asking for a litre of Petrol in Belgium and France!

I have seriously considered selling the CLK and buying a smart car but in the end I just can't bring myself to do it.

Stupidly I spent an absolute fortune on a professional Alpine install which I'll never get back if I sold the car, and with the limited miles I do it's just not worth making the switch to diesel.
