I'm driving to Italy, and have been told that I need 5 star breakdown cover.

"You must ensure you take out five star European breakdown cover for the vehicle"

Any idea what this is? All major breakdown companies seem to say they are 5-star breakdown... but I'm guessing it means something legally; right?

Only if you believe what the AA want you to believe.

I don't recall Green Flag calling their European cover '5 star'.

It's just marketing.

Our Recovery Plus Cover has been awarded a 5 star rating by Defaqto. Defaqto is an independent research company that specialises in comparing, rating and analysing financial products.

But then again, all breakdown companies seem to have that defaqto 5 star rating...

Just want to make sure my leasing company doesn't kick up a fuss if I have an accident in Italy!

I ended up calling the leasing company- it is the defaqto rating. Odd... just about every breakdown service out there is "5 star" by that standard...

Indeed - but why would a leasing company fall for that?! You would think they do their homework...

Ahhhh.

Different. Not a legal thing but a contractual thing. Leasing company trying to cover itself against the vehicle being stuck abroad and the 'owner' not being able to afford to repatriate the car.

That makes sense. Maybe the Defaqto rating counts for something.

Sort of a moot point with the likes of MB as Mobilo will apply to most lease cars.
