1985 500SL
Evening all.
I have a 1985 500SL with a fist sized hole in the block (water jacket), just behind the starter motor.
Welding, be it JB or proper, is not going to work, so I need to swap the block/engine out. Not ideal I know.
So I'm looking at a bare engine online - M117.965 from I think a 500SEL but a late 80's model with black rocker covers.
My engine is M117.962. Does that one digit make much difference?
I know the oil sump and manifolds would be routed different plus a few other bits but that shouldn't matter if I'm only swapping the bare engine right?
My existing parts should bolt straight on.
Does anyone out there see any issues I'd have with this approach?
Anything I should watch for or anyone had to do similar?
Any tips, advice, guidance appreciated. Ta. kzs.
btw - I am no mechanic, a mechanic friend (but not an 80's Merc engine specialist) is doing this for me, I'm just trying to research and buy the right bits.

How did you manage to get the engine block busted?
What did you do?

Yes it will work

It was stood outside for 7yrs before I got it. I guess lack of anti-freeze and repeated freeze/thaw of the water that was present eventually found a weak spot. First picture is the hole, 2nd is the JB Weld repair that failed.

Cheers... absolutely sure right? Have you done this swap? Differing compression ratio won't have an effect? And all the existing ancillaries will just bolt straight on? Any further details would be great. Thanks..

Have an effect on what? I expect that you'll get better compression with a block that doesn't have a hole.
