500E on ebay

Were they realy made by Porsche???!!!???(as the seller sais)
No, that's like saying the Seat Ibiza was made by Porsche, or the Vauxhall Corsa was made by Lotus. The car was breathed on by Porsche and each car did spend some time in the Porsche factory across the road, that much is true :) .

I saw a 500E yesterday, they look very mean with the slightly flared wheel arches etc :)

there's a buyer's guide on the W124 E500 in Merc Enthusiast this month, so they guy picked a good time to sell

According to the article in MB Enthusiast, they WERE made by Porsche. At the time Porsche's only model in the range was the 993 so they had quite a bit of spare capacity.

It probably went some way to help fund the development of the 996 911 and also the Boxster cars, both of which saved Porsche from extinction.

Yup, they were indeed made by Porsche.
240,000 miles  It's certainly well run in!
At that mileage things are bound to wear out and 500E parts are expensive and not always easy to get. I think I'll pass.

It's mostly the same as the 300E though, the engine and transmission are from a 500SL, so the parts are all stock OEM MB. The only other differences between the 500E and other w124s are in the chassis, where modifications were made to fit the larger engine etc, and in the body panels, which are all slightly different except for the front doors I think :)

Classic 500E problem - ECU failed - buy another car while you wait for a replacement to be sourced/made. George Fraser had one for a long time looking for one. Spoke to the owner, and he was disappointed it was taking so long.

Developed in conjunction with Porsche, the Mercedes 500E was based on the popular 300E model which had been released in 1986. Each 500E was transported back and forth between the Mercedes plant and Porsche's Rossle-Bau plant in Zuffenhausen during assembly and hand built, taking a full 18 days to complete each model. It was produced between 1992-94 in which time approximately 7200 cars were built.
