Wifeys car is in for a 60K service. This is a minor service with an MoT. The service interval is a fixed 12K we do this each year so it gets one service per year.

Anyway I cant believe the phone calls I have been getting.

Minor Service £200
MoT £35

OK - £200 for a minor on a 1.6 petrol scenic seems steep but the major one last year was £350, and my total bill was £550 because the wing mirror dropped off. (Replaced Merc wing mirror for £40 last year)

I get a call saying the wiper rubbers need replacing for the MoT - an other £35. I replaced these myself in July with renault ones it cost me £35 then! Is this going to cost me £70 per annum?

Then an other call saying that the timing belt needs doing as this is recommended at 60K and if it goes it will cost you £2000 to get the engine fixed.

An other £350

I have just got an other call saying pads need doing in next 1000 miles or so. This will be another £250.

We are now talking £900

This Scenic costs me far more to run 12K miles per annum than my Mercedes cost to run 25K per annum. It also depreciated like a stone. I have never had a bill like this on my Mercedes for what is basically a service.

a 60k service on any car is the one that usually stings the most. It's the stage where manufacturers recommend a lot of parts to be changed, such as the timing chain and cambelts.

that's why a lot of cars come up for sale at around the 60k mileage mark.

Mind you £900 for a Renault is excessive although there's a lot of additional items to do on it. An MB dealer quoted me £700 for a 55k B service for mine! eventually took it to a specialist who did everything plus a full set of pads for the price.

Ouch sounds like the garage are screwing you big time there

And now a water pump!!

It gets even better.

I have just had a call to say that the water pump is on its way out!! and this needs replacing.

They are going to give me a ring back with how much this is

I probably could but I am somewhat committed now. I don't think we will be using main dealer next time.

Water Pump £137

 Well the water pump is £137 and they wont guarentee the other work unless it is done!

why not ask trading standards to look at this for you ?

when you collect the car demand the parts back that they have replaced :)
when ypu have them, then tell them that you are going to have Trading Standards, examine them...

Audi pulled this stunt on my mother inlaw re the timing belt so farther inlaw took the car home and removed the belt and took it back to them
 it was in perfect working order ! it was the last time they saw the car

Renault's have always had a reputation for expensive parts, I guess their labour rates match that too!

My Mum's 1.2 Renault Clio has just had its first service and that was £260 which she was quite shocked at.

it seems to be a known fault with Renault engines and very much the same hit my sister in law with their Clio except they went to an independent mechanic who didn't change the water pump when the timing belt was due (have a look on the Clio forums they all say the two jobs need to be done together) the net result was the water pump failed about a month later 400 miles from home taking the whole top half of the engine with it (nice new timing belt and all) and costing them nearly £600 in repairs.

Sadly the only safe choice is to bite the bullet and sell the car before the next round of major replacements are due - if it's not been replaced already you may want to give the exhaust a thorough check - they seem to have a habit of self destructing any time after 50k

It gets even better!!!

Went to pick up vehicle tonight at 6pm when they said it would all be done.

Guess what, its in peices and they say it wont be ready until Tuesday

Anyway as we are away next week told them I would not be able to pick it up until the following Monday and I would pay then. So now they can keep the car in secure parking :) This did not please them.

Moral of story buy a Merc.

My god. I bet they where all stood round the phone snigering saying to each other, "I wonder what else we can get away with the next time we ring him up, lets see how far we can push him"!!!

Sorry for being so Cynical but ive worked at a main dealer and seen what they can get up to :(

I would do this and refuse to pay until they give you all the old parts and can proove they are off the car. Just try and make sure they dont get parts from the parts bin and try and tell you they are from your car!!!!!(seen it done before :( ) Long winded i know but i think they are trying it on bigstyle.

I don't see how they are trying it on, as I said earlier most of these are known issues with some Renault engines. The water pump is good for about 60k and the timing belt about 45k. If you don't change the waterpump )which has an annoying habit of seizing solid when it fails and destroting the whole top half of the engine in one go) at the prescribed service interval it's not surprising the garage are unwilling to guarantee the timing belt installation.

It will be pretty easy to see if they have installed new parts as the pump is easily seen.

For the record I don't think you are being robbed and how would you feel if you were to disregard the dealers recommendations only to have your engine self destruct 3 months down the line?

Surely all this money on a renault of that age is pouring good after bad ...

Did you condider a new one before they do all this work to it?

By the time you have added up the loss in a cars value over the first 3 years that buys an awful lot of repair work on the 3 year old car

The bill may be a bit high but the repairs are wear and tear, other than the waterpump, which is a bit premature.

The trick is now to keep the car to get the benefit of paying for the repairs, not as some people do and get rid of it once they have had a large bill.

A few years ago I bought a couple of Renault Extra vans for my Business fleet.

We monitored the running costs over 4 years, and it was greater than any other vevicle on the fleet including MB's and BMW's.

When we sold them they were worth almost nothing.

A few years ago I bought a Saxo for one of the ladies at the office. That also cost a bomb in service and repairs, and when I traded it in it was worth almost nothing.

A few years ago I bought a pair of Citroen Xantia Estates for two of my Service engineers. The repairs and servicing costs were horrendous, and the resale value was crap.

I now avoid buying any French cars and vans like the plague.

I am surprised it took you three times to come to that conclusion though:p
