Hi,

Just somthing to be aware of.

We are replacing a huge amount of oil cooler seals on this engine at the moment. Its a 9.6 hour job to do, so can make it a few quid to fix.

The symtoms are oil drips around the bell housing area. They can leak a horrific amount of oil and cover the underside of the car.

We did our first one about a year ago but now doing 3-4 a month....

Thanks for the info Olly

Roughly at what sort of mileage / age do they tend to show signs of leakage ?

Similar here. The earlier cars don't seem to be as common, but 2010 vintage and newer seem to suffer much more. :dk:

Olly mine gas oil around the sump gasket which I suppose is near the bell housing. Is there any way to see if it's coming from the cooler before removing lots of stuff? I think the cooler is buried between the v is this correct. ?

Cool. It just gets damp at the rear of the sump but is also slightly up from sump at rear onto the block but only an inch so I'd imagine it's the sump.

It can be all kinds of mileage. We have had them at 100k and 200k etc[

would this be covered under any third party warranty such as warrantywise, who claim to cover engine oil seals?

I'm about to take out a policy with them

Thanks

Best to check with the company. I know that Warranty Direct would not usually cover oil leaks unless the main component, ie engine, gearbox, or diff needs to be removed in order to fix the issue.

I had a very minor leak on the sump gasket on my previous Merc and they refused to cover it for that reason, however they did the cover and replace the diff seals as the diff needed to be removed in order to replace the seals.

It is best to check with the company if oil leaks are covered.

Would this be an issue with a 2012 e350?
I did read that they had the upgraded purple seals.

Thanks

We have not had a late car like yours fail here at PCS (yet).

What year cars is it affecting?

got a small oil leak on the 2012 - c350 Cdi I picked up this week, need to check to see if its just the turbo inlet seal, or whether it's this issue.

I'm hoping its just the turbo seals, is there an easy way to check guys?

Or should I get a specialist to have a look, if it is the oil cooler it'll be going back!

We also do a huge amount of these. Done a vito sport X this week. What a job that was! I find the dpf equipped cars leak much worse and I put it down to the diesel in the oil perishing the seals

My 2012 350cdi at 103k miles was diagnosed to the previous owner by the Merc main dealer as sump leaking or rear crank seal leaking & quoted him £ accordingly. I bought the car as it was & it was cooler seals leaking.

Hi all I need some help. I have a 2008 Mercedes ml 320 CDI. I bought it in October 2015. I have now noticed an oil leak, about 5 drops worth on the drive way. It's going to the garage next week for diagnostic. But since I have bought the car I had it serviced in march 2015, April 2015 oil cooler basket replaced under warranty. November 2015 breather valve changed however the Indy garage did advise the turbo may need changing....... RAC warranty wouldn't pay for recon turbo or new one as it's not broken. So I just Had the breather valve changed for £250. Seemed fine until last week when a few oil spots were on the drive. Car drives well and no issues. Put 1 litre of oil today as it was near minimum. Can anyone give me some pointers for when it goes to the garage. Thanks in advance. Rikesh
