had a spare half hour, the car was on the ramp, thought I'd be smart and see to the slight leak from the pilot bush.
managed to get the plastic core misaligned as I reinserted it and bent one of the pins when tightening the centre screw. Didn't notice, took a while to figure out why it wouldn't change gear (STAR said fault with 3/4 gear solenoid - the bent pin!)
Snapped the pin off trying to straighten it.
Finally removed the electrohydraulic unit and was dead lucky to be able to drill out the remains of the pin and solder a new one in (the stem from a pop rivet actually). Lucky that the component is substantially made and lends itself to a repair in this way. Turns out that a locating lug on the component wasn't properly engaged and caused the misalignement.
Started the half hour job at 1.00pm, finished 10 hours later!
So, the message is, don't be hamfisted like me when reinserting the pastic core into the gearbox - make sure the pins line up.
Hasn't the weather been lovely, it's been great working outside!
