Hi guys,

I'm having an issue with the 7G gearbox in my 2007 CLS63. I had to have a new gearbox fitted in Dec 16 as the oil pump filled in mine resulting in a new gearbox and torque converter from Mercedes at a price of £5,200 (they originally wanted £7k!)

The new gearbox and converter had been working fine until a month ago when i experienced he following issue: On a spirited drive, in the sport gearbox setting, when the gearbox when to change up from 4th to 5th at the redline the gearbox made a very slow gear change (approx 2 seconds) from 4th to 5th where the engine revved as though it was in neutral before 5th gear slamming in very roughly. I haven't had this problem again (i don't drive the car like that very often) but now, every day when cold the first two shifts (in comfort setting) from 2nd to 3rd and then 3rd to 4th are very slow and rough. Sometimes, but not all the time the acceleration between the gear changes can be lumpy. The best way to describe the gear changes is that there is a gap between the gear engaging and in that gap the engine revs rise in conjunction with how much throttle i have on.

I have also noticed some rough down changes and when using the paddle shifter the up change isn't a s smooth as it has been.

My question is does this sound like an electronic issue or mechanical? I have called Mercedes and they have said if the issues is within the gearbox then it will be covered by the 2 year warranty i have but if not I will have to pay for repairs. Normally I take my car to a good Indy near me but considering i have a warranty on the gearbox if the problem lies there then want Mercedes to fix it. I'm just worried they will tell me the problem is electronic or somehow outside etc gearbox.

Any help and guidance is appreciated.

Get it plugged into Star at your indie and any stored/current codes will hopefully tell you and them whats what....

I would approach the dealer that fitted the gearbox. These are supposed to last a wee bit longer then 18 months!!!!

Yeah, I think I'll get my indy to look at the codes and depending on what they say take it back to the dealer.

Thanks guys!

Personally I wouldn’t let
anyone touch it but the dealer that fitted it.

Yup, agree with this.
Take it back to them promptly and don’t let anyone else work on it in any way.
Dealer/AMG will jump at the chance to blame the issue on “outside influences”.
