Hi all,

I'm planning to use the Meyle service kit for my gearbox which comes with new magnets, gasket, filter and 10L of blue transmission oil.

Anyone got any reviews from this Meyle kit? It's cheaper than direct from MB and includes a new bolt of the torque converter drain, and magnets, plus the overflow straw thing for the drain.

Quality seems to be up there, at least based on a few conversions, just hoping to get a bit more confirmation.

Cheers.

Do you have a link to the kit?

Thank you.

You have a drain plug on your Torque converter ? You lucky , lucky Ba****d ! :p Have a thought for us 722.6 5 speed guy's . Some had a drain , some did not.

No prizes for guessing which one I got :(

I'm not actually 100% sure that mine has one, they sell the same kit supplied with different amounts of oil, depending on whether you are able to drain the torque converter or not. I think this 10L kit is too much, but I'm bound to spill some etc.

There's also this genuine kit on eBay, but it's less oil, and doesn't include some of the extra bits.

Both state 10 litres of fluid.

Meyle does not get good reviews for quality on many forums. For that reason, and given that it is your gearbox and not the ashtray, I'd stump up the cash at MB.

Depending on the vehicle the amount of ATF that gets left behind in the TC and the transmission cooling circuit when just the oil pan is dropped is quite significant.

'Tinternet is full of videos/advice , particularly on the 722.6/9 where a pressure plate tool (CTA 7650) can be purchased and compressed air used to evacuate 'all' the ATF during a service.

It's easy to see why some garages just drop the sump and bang 5 litres in along with a new filter ....time , time is money . A car sitting on the lift for hours draining down is not what some garage owners want to see.

For any transmission stuff I stick with MB. Not that the parts warranty is any use to you in the event of a problem. I had a thermostat fail and they wanted the car in to diagnose it with a big bill coming my way. If they had fitted it that is another matter.

Go in the dealer and haggle. £160 is too expensive. That’s a 5L can of fluid.

You're absolutely right, if you wanted to get every last drop out that would be the way to go. However, on my car with the later iteration of that gearbox I can supposedly drain about 9L from the sump and torque converter drain combined. The extra litre in these service kits allows for cycling through the gearbox and then draining out of the overflow when setting the level at the end of the procedure. Personally, I don't look to try and remove every last drop of any service fluid anymore, its just not necessary with regular servicing. Of course there will be situations where it is, but for an at home DIY on a vehicle with no underlying issues, I'll sleep just fine with this method. Even with the garages doing a quick "spill and fill", if done regularly enough, I think its perfectly acceptable, as long as you know that's what you're paying for...

I think you could also disconnect the oil cooler return line and pump fresh fluid in whilst running the engine and essentially have the car flush itself out. Once fresh fluid comes out of the return line you would know you've got a complete fluid change. Reconnect it and set the level and you're golden, no special tools needed. Only thing is I'm not sure which models actually have an oil cooler.

Only purchased 2 items from Meyle that went tits up in 6 months it was the last time i even look at any of the parts they make so use at your peril

I have actually opted for the Meyle kit despite your comments (I know, I know!), but the thinking is, the car is new to me and its had a transmission service at an independent garage about 50k miles ago, and I have no idea what exactly they've done or what quality stuff they've used - keep your fingers crossed I'm not going to find red fluid when I drain it. Despite that, the car drives absolutely fine so it can't be that bad. Looking on a few VAG forums, Meyle actually gets pretty positive reviews, they do the VAG DSG fluid that people seem to be happy with, and supposedly its made in Germany - whether or not that matters is another question.

On top of all of that, I don't actually think there's much to it, the filter is pretty simple and Meyle claims theirs is also "Smart Media", the rest of the kit is just hardware which leaves the fluid. The Meyle one is NOT on Bevo as an approved spec fluid, but there are many other aftermarket fluids that are on there, so the MB stuff can't be all that special.

Anyway, I'll give it a shot and report back, if anything it'll serve as a bit of a flush fluid for now, and next time I'll go for genuine.
