Hello,

Anyone got any tips on how to test if this unit is faulty or not?

I've taken it apart, does anyone know what's in picture 1 between the black and silver components?

Also the solder joints in pic 2 look a dry, so I'll re-solder them to start of with.

That's an electrolytic capacitor.
Value should be printed on it.
Should be simple to change - just make sure you put it in the right way round!!

Maplins will have them. Cheap as chips.
As Grober said, if one is starting to go, then others will be on their way out.
Look at the end and see if it is bulging. You can also see this where the wires come out - you will see the rubber bulging.
Did I say put them in the right way round? :) ;)

Yes the manky black one.
There will be a working voltage and a value measure in microfarads. Looks like a backwards 'U' so something like 4.7Uf 20V

Make a careful note where they are soldered into the board.-- take a photo ---print it out ---and then write on the photo the value and polarity [ positive and negative connections] on the board. If possible unsolder one connector leg of each capacitor - this should allow you to bend it into a position to read the value printed on it without totally removing it. unless you take careful note its all too easy to come back with the new capacitors to find you have forgotton where they connect back on the board. An electronics man would source the replacement capacitor first after ascertaining its value before removing the old one if at all possible.

Thanks Ted & Grober.

Yea, I'll be sourcing them before I remove them and will do one at a time.
