Display says A service due in 30 days. It is the first time the car will be serviced since we bought it from new.

Reading through some of the post it has been suggested that we should supply the oil ourselves to help reduce the cost. Should we phone the dealer beforehand to tell them we are supplying the oil ourselves?

Is 8 litre the correct amount to supply. Also, should it be Mobil 1 0W-40 or should we ask the dealer beforehand what oil to supply? I did read somewhere on the forum that someone said that the dealers recommends Castrol SLX-II 0-30W.

Thanks.

What model of car do you have?

Im sure you need 5.5 litres for that car . Check your handbook :)

Id personally just use Castrol GTX magnitec TBH , unless you intend on keeping the car forever...

Just checked. You are right, it is 5.5 litres. :bannana:

Unless lady luck says "it's you", will be keeping the car for a wee while yet. :)

Sorry for my ignorance, what is the difference bewtween Castrol GTX magnitec and Mobil 1 0W-40? Is it just price or is the Castrol GTX magnitec a semi-synthetic unlike the Mobil 1 ?

Lastly, is Costco still one of the cheapest place to purchase oil or can I get it cheaper elsewhere?

Thanks a lot.

Mobil 1 at Costco was cheaper when I bought 4 litres recently. :)

GTX Magnitec is about £12 for 4.5 litres from costco and its what the dealers charge £10 a litre for.

Mobil 1 0w40 is overkill in anything less than an AMG or similar performance car....IMHO This costs about £22 for 4 litres in costco.

I would buy the chevron semi-synth or full synth from costco. It's good oil and really cheap in the 20 litre drums.
Also it meets MB specs.

Personally I wouldn't use Magnatec as it is a fairly low grade base oil with a small amount of synthetic polymer added. It doesn't even rate as a proper semi-synth.

The best quality, preferrably synthetic oil will give the best engine life and lowest boil off characteristics, so less topping up required.

Just my 2p.

Are they doing the chevron synthetic in drums in costco now?

I had some of that in my escort, it was rather good. Will be using it if I get a scorpio next too - cosworth engine deserves good stuff.

Will get brother-in-law to get it at Costco as he is a member. ;)

Rather spend a little more to get the quality. As they say prevention is better than cure. :)
