Hi to all - New boy to this but I hope you can help me, I have had in the past a W124 300TE 4Matic which was fantastic until a sherpa van killed it while I stood next to it. I now have an opportunity to buy a '91 E300D It's done 119,000 from new bodywork and interior(via pictures) in great condition the concern I have is this the owner has told me that the engine runs but two cylinders are not working - could anyone suggest the possible cause's and ball park no's regarding costs to repair/replace. Any help would be greatly appreciated - car will be used for weekends etc.

Hi, The present owner has not been very informative and no doubt the reason he is selling the car is because he already knows that it is going to cost a lot to put right. Could be the injectors,,, could be head gasket if the two non working cylinders are next t o each other,,, could be piston rings if low on compression. If you a re good at mechanical work then you could take a gamble and budget for worse scenario of another engine.
If you are not good at mechanical work, then walk away and wait for one that is working ok to come along. There is always one to be found somewhere. Regards.

The pre-facelift diesels are slow, slow, slow. Once you drive a multivalve you'll never want a car with the old engine

If you can locate a complete engine for the 300TD then it might be worth swopping engines. I expect an engine strip & rebuild would cost more than the car is worth

Overall the car sounds good. Get someone to inspect it and then if the money right and you're feeling lucky and happy with the inspect report, go for it. After all if it is a h/gasket only, what are you looking at to do the job, £500-600? :dk:

Worth, getting in touch with a Merc specialist for both inspection & repair costs, if you still fancy the car.
