93 190E 2.6 -- DOA -- Starter Woes?

Hi!

I'm having some problems with my '93 190E 2.6 and am looking for some help. This afternoon when I went to start it nothing happened. At first I thought the battery was just low (it was a little below freezing today) so I tried jumping the battery but still had no luck getting the engine to crank. It was then that I realized that I had other problems.....

At this point the battery seems okay. The lights, radio, and other electrical stuff seems to work fine -- just the starter refuses to show any sign of life. I tried starting the car in Park and Neutral. I checked my service manual but for some reason can't find any details on the starter for a model 103 / 2.6 engine. It only lists starters for 4 cylinder gas and diesel engines.

Can someone please tell me if there is an easy way to check the condition of this particular starter on the 2.6? How hard is it to remove and reinstall? Does this sound like a starter problem??

Any feedback would be appreciated!

Cheers!

1st off - try jumping with jump negative on the engine, not battery - might be bad lead from batt to engine.

try turning engine over manually 1/8th turn? use spanner on front

do the lights dim at all when trying to turn over? NO = bad solenoid / wire to solenoid - its not even trying to fire the motor - try shorting the terminals on the starter and getting the motor to spin. also try shorting from battery + to thin little lead (the one that fires the starter)

Then come back to us... good luck! :)

oh - and welcome..

Thanks DD! I'll give those suggestions a try. I did notice that the lites did NOT dim when I tried to start the car. That was when I figured it wasn't just a low battery.....

Thx!

If it is the starter I can talk you though it as I have removed one on a 260E and a 2.6 190E. Do as Guy suggests, he is seldom wrong.
