Hi, my brother in law has a '96 280SL and everytime he turns the sidelights on the fuse blows (for the drivers side lights). He obviously has a dead short as it still does it with the bulbs removed.
Does anyone have any ideas or a circuit diagram for the sidelights?

cheers
Chris

No circuit diagram, but I suggest this.

Make up a test light with a 21w (flasher) bulb in it and two fly leads.
connect the two fly leads to either side of the fuse that blows.
Turn on the sidelights.
If there is a short, the flasher bulb will glow brightly.
Now start tracing the fault by tracing an disconnecting. I think the cable colour is grey with red tracer (otherwise grey with black tracer, but I think that is passenger side)

Start with the simple/easy stuff - front sidelight plugs, rear combination lamp plugs, number plate lamp (if affected)

When you disconnect the part with the short, the test lamp will go to half brightness, and you will see the lamps on the car which are still connected glowing dimly.

Be methodical, and you should be able to trace this.

Make sure that the test lamp isn't resting against anything which may melt or mark.

Thanks to both of you - I'll pass those on & see if they help..

Cheers
Chris
