I've just bought an a-class at auction, and all was good until 10 miles into the journey the 'D' symbol changed to 'F' giving 2nd or 5th gear and reverse. It also became jerky and a little rough at slowing and pull away.

Since then its OK for a short while with no faults then it pops back in to 'F'.

I have read on honestjohn (http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/index.php?url=/carbycar/index.htm) that this is common and curable with a revised transmission governor. Has anyone had this or any experience of carrying out the change? I am reasonably mechanically minded and dont mind getting my hands dirty as long as there are clear instructions to follow. And there is no haynes manual as you know.

Any advice welcomed.

Personally i would begin by taking the car to a MB specialist who has diagnostic facilities. Once on diagnostics it will tell you the exact fault so you will know whats involved in repairing it, as it may or may not be the governor.

I now have the Error code P0600 - Serial Communication Link Malfunction

I've now had some feedback suggesting it sounds like the main control unit which they call it the gearbox valve body
on the bottom of the gearbox, the valve body controls all the running of the
box and gear selector etc

Does that sound right/familiar to anyone?
