Hi
haveing just bought 1998 A140, and reading up on the model their appears to be a lot of faults with the model,
alot of the work around the engine requires it either out or being dropped,
crankshaft sensor/ cam ,ecu ect,
mines has 54,000 mls and some surface rust ,bought it for the wife ,
as i have a c class d auto (which runs for ever, cheap as chips to run ,and so far ,never missed a beat )
so should i keep it?( the A 140 )
if so any thing to luck for at the mileage the car has?
was looking at Albert Rowe, Lofty's homepage and thinking of getting one of the CD,S but not avaliable anymore? anyone got one?
thanks
steve.

Having bought my 1998 A160 about a month ago now, and having it checked over by a friend, who is a mechanic here's my honest opinion;

Great little run around, it's quick, lightweight, and possibly one of the easiest things i've every driven (semi automatic, no clutch)

Mines done 115,000 miles and engine wise, its still as sound as ever. Fuel consumption isn't the best, and if it's really low, it might be worth having the MAF (i think, talk to Howard) checked out. He has a website to a company that can do it for a couple of hundred quid.

Surface rust can be sorted pretty easily, so thats nothing to worry about.

For your wife, depends what she wants to use it for. I use it to go to and from college, and to and from work, and then obviously out and about with friends. And quiet honestly, i'm so glad I found this rather than buying a Fiesta.

In fairness, it's a great little car, if your looking for a little run around, anything more than that, i'd suggest looking at something else.

Hope this helps. Message me if you want anymore info on mine.

Hi
car just a run around ,no motorway work ,
whasts the maf? What does it do?thanks
steve.

in a w168 its a maf ecu combined

ecu is the brains for the car and maf tell it how much air its getting if it fails car goes into limp mode , can stutter and hunt , and run very bad on idle

cost new about 1000 pounds but some have been repaired for 400 pounds

albert is the man on this car

Cost for a new A class MAS nowadays is £1500+ The MAS's are repairable for £220 from ecutesting.com . Take it out yourself , takes ten minutes , no need to drop the engine.

I had ours done on our A190. Car is transformed.

mention Loftys Homepage and you'll get a 10% discount.

People who knock the little 168 are people who tend to have never driven one , just recounting what they have read on 'Honest John' ( an oxymoron if ever there was one )
