Yesterday I got my self out of bed nice and early to embark on one of my tours of Scotland. Given there is not so much day light until later on I hit the road about 8am.

Leaving Helensburgh it was somewhat murky and I wafted up Loch Lomond, (A82) then took the route known as “the rest and be thankful” and continued to Inverarry. The weather was somewhat typical of the area but it was slowly clearing.

A wee stop at Inverarry

Taking the route as I call it going over the top to Dalmally and then connecting with the A85 to Tyndrum. Scumbag will tell you this is one of the best driving routes around. Lots of sweeping bends, elevation changes, views to die for. The car was magnificent on this section of road keeping tight body control and the torque to power out of bends was at times overwhelming the back tyres (it was damp and rather fun). Who ever tells you the manual override paddles/buttons are a gimmick as this gives you an element of control and adds to the fun. From Tydnrum the weather was lifting and I decided to reign in the fun and cruise up the A82 through Glencoe.

You can clearly see the weather has improved.

Can you guess where I am?

After getting to Ballahulish I decided the best way to go is to take a turn for Loch Leven. This is a serious driving road, tight turns after turn. The normal E class AG was good here, but the sport a lot more controlled and fun.

After taking this detour I decided what I really wanted to do was continue on the A82 route to Inverness and take in Loch Lochy and Loch Ness as its been a couple of years since I drove this route.

I made a good choice. Traffic was light, the 60mph limit easily attainable and I had the roads to myself much of the way until I closed in on Inverness.

The views are pretty nice. Here are some of Loch Locky

The road is a cracker and a nice Loch side view

On to Loch Ness.

Here is castle Urquart

Yeah, the views are rubbish

I hit Inverness and then realized I wanted to go back by Loch Lagan. I had 40 miles of boring A9 today (road wise, not view wise) and settled to a nice on the speed limit cruise. For an area that is guaranteed bad winters, their roads have a lot less potholes than our own. Whether they use better materials, but lessons need learned for the way Highland council maintain their roads. BTW, they have an unmarked Grey Mondeo as I saw it pull someone in.

I stopped for a wee snack near Dalwhinnie and took that route to the A86 back to Lagan

There is a desolate feeling to part of the Cairngorms

I prefer Lagan and the west

Then back to Ft William and onto the A82

Every mile a joy, every minute a priviledge and it makes my recent less than pleasant experiences with dealers, mechanical issues seem worth all the grief. To get out and really drive this car makes you realize just what a fantastic part of the world I live in, and what a car I have got.

Gone a bit green.
That looks like a superb day out.
Those landscapes shots are excellent.
It makes me want to do a tour myself.

We need to do a Scotland hoon ...

Will, you know me, never one for hard graft.

Ran into someone on a delivery, up from Manchester, said he always stops there for a pic. He gets to drive up here every week on deliveries.

Who is more fortunate, him with his big van, fuel paid for to drive around here on work, or the exec with the SL who only gets to do 5k/yr in it?

Can you guess where I am?

After getting to Ballahulish

My guess is Glencoe IIRC the small hill in the last picture is on the left as you look North towards the Pap of Glencoe. Am I right???

I spent every Spring Bank week in Ballahullish for about 7 years as a kid with my parents, sister, Aunt, Uncle & cousins. Beautiful part of the country. My dad loved it so much that when we scattered his ashes it was from the top of the hill behind the B&B we stayed in looking out over Loch Leven. Followed by a toast of his favourite single malt at 10 o'clock on a Sunday morning, his spirit is wandering the glens even now.

Fantastic pictures by the way.:)

10/10 for snoop. A lovely place for family holidays, sounds like you left your old man in the right place. All those happy memories.

Thought I recognised it, even though the last time up there was 6 years ago. Well overdue another trip up there or thereabouts.:thumb: Isn't the ski lift on that side too, maybe the next hill?

it is, but its the hill back before the rock cutting from memory. Its gods driving country up here. You could go down Glen Etive as well, nice run and lovely views.

Nice photos Steve. One day you should wallk up those mountains. The views at the top, when not mistly, are even better.

Hey! already done!

And I SO know those views of Loch Lochy, a few miles after the Commando Memorial, as I have stopped at Letterfinlay Lodge many times when it was family run.

I love Scotland. :) Thank you.

Excellent report and great photos. I assume you cleaned your car up with Photoshop? :)

Just like the spirit of the Fort William distillery flowed the day after we walked up Ben Nevis without any preparation.

Whisky is a great pain reliever when taken in enough quantity..:D

I've been to Letterfinlay lodge as well, many family holidays. Its looking a bit run down otherwise would have gone in for old times sake.

Pictures mildly edited in picasa and Nikon view NX, all taken with a polarising filter.

Thanks Steve - another cracking road trip and write-up. Good lad! :thumb:

I'm with Sean - a summer hoon up to Scotland (how about a (long) weekend?) must be relatively straight forward to organise. A couple of nights in a B&B and some of Steve's best routes should make for a belting trip. Some food and the odd dram here and there and we should be well away!

How about it?

beautiful photos Steve!

Really brought back happy memories of the time I owned a bungalow in Kingussie and looked out at the cairngorms every morning when I woke! :) Thanks for that! :)

I must get up that way again soon as I have a cousin who lives in Inverness.... :)

I've been think this as well mate.

A good time would be August/September when the Schools are back and Jonny foreigner have retreated back. Means you get more road time.

I can think up many routes and make sure the "uninitiated" get driving Nirvana. A good route would be the one I done, upto Inverness. For the Whisky fans Speyside and a distillery visit would be a good send off then a run down (druk has done it as have I) by Glenshee and to Perth as well as take in the Dee valley.

The only problem is making sure the weather is good.
