Today I went to defect away from Mercedes......

Went into a Porsche dealership and took out a Boxster - 03 plate with 10,000 (yes 10,000) miles....tiptronic.

Was great fun BUT.....when I got back into my Merc C320 cdi - I prefered it..smoother pull, seemed faster too...nicer ride....

So am very depressed as thats a dream I have had for ages just dashed...oh well must go try a Boxster S if I have more funds...:bannana:

Hello,

Granted maybe feels smoother and it would be a nicer ride, show both a bend it would be different.

Also roof down on a day like today it is great.

Cars are too different for comparison..

Yeah but the Boxster S is a much better beast to the standard Boxster. Try the S - you'll feel differently ;)

The C320 CDI engine has shedloads more torque than the standard boxster engine, and more than the Boxster S engine. Thats why it feels slow.

My mates Cayman S feels slower to me than the CLK320CDI I drove recently. Thats until you want to go around a corner!

Also, a tiptronic Porsche is an automatic Porsche.

To experience the full flavour, I'd agree with others and take out a Boxster S with a manual transmission.

oops also teaches me to read,

A tiptronic and not an 'S'......

As the others have said try a manual 'S'

I remember a friends 2.5 boxster...aaarrgghhh

I've always wanted a Porsche, but I don't think it will ever be a Boxter.

Sure they are nice cars, but is your dream really to have the Boxter or a Porsche?

Even the Boxster S isn't particularly quick and for me hasn't the style of a 911 either, so I find it hard to imagine desiring one specifically. I see a new 3.4 sharpening up the performance times though. The figures for the tip box do seem particularly bad compared to the manuals accross the Porsche range.

I don't like convertibles either which doesn't help the case for me, but I accept that is a fairly unpopular preference.

Doubt you'll ever be able to walk into Porsche and buy one anyway if you can't spell it right. ;)

A Boxster isn't just about outright speed, its about an amazingly fluid and well designed chassis, and having experienced a few they leave any saloon I have driven in the shade.

I'm sure that is correct for you, but I for one prefer the comfort and sumptuous driving experience of my saloon ;) over a Porsche (last time I drove one of those I had a back ache for a week ).

As John might say: to each their own :D.

I absolutely agree with you. :)

I'm sure you'd also agree (as would your suffering back ;) ) that looking for a comfortable and sumptuous driving experience in a Porsche is almost always going to end badly.

Yes, I do agree with that :D.

My Chimaera would happily pass a Boxster S without even dropping down a cog :)

A VX220 turbo, well lets just say that it was an even match :)

Go drive an SLK32 AMG (R170) - bet you'd love it - much more comfortable but very quick. OK any car enthusiast will turn their nose up at the Merc vs the porsche but real world is a different matter. Also good value these days I suspect.

I've had a similar experience with a boxster and 996 - love looking at them and dreaming of having one, but real world driving experience brings you back to reality.

I think its something to do with the fact that Porsches (and Mercs) have always been so aspirational - I'm 34 and when growing up always dreamed of being able to drive a porsche.
One of my most memorable days was when I bought my first Merc - 2nd hand SL320 - I had realised a dream (wife didn't know what the fuss was about of course).

Yes I agree the cornering is in a different league -- but I dont go whizzing round corners........................too often..lol

I have a Boxster 2.7 Tiptronic, and only selling because I need more seats.
I have done 25,000 miles in one year, and had no problems like those mentioned. However, there are two suspension settings available standard and MO30, which is the harder Motorsport setup.

The 2.7 Tiptronic in "REAL" world driving is plenty quick enough, I find myself regularly having to back off.

On the back roads, a TVR wouldn't see which way a Boxster went!
Handling and feel is just superb, and the brakes are excellent with plenty of feel, although to start with they can feel wooden at slow speeds.

I'm changing mine on Sunday, when I pickup my E55 AMG.

By the way hello, as I am new on here, and MAFF its all your fault for introducing me to the world of MAD MERC'S

Leigh.

I would have assumed the boxter would have gone to get the AA for the TVR :D

I was following a Cerbera once, very early on a bright and frosty morning. I was in my R129, in no particular rush and not driving hard. On all the straight bits he rocketed away, but every time we came to a bend or roundabout I caught up as he tiptoed around it :D
