A Drum Solo.

Three comments;

That is astounding!
Who is he and who does he play with?
Thank goodness Keith Moon never saw this - the one-upmanship would have been better than anything the North Koreans could have put together! :):)

For those who don't know who or what Kieth Moon was here's a clip, the bloke in the green shirt has him well sorted. He had his own rules and style and answered to nobody in his profession. Fits with the theory the very best always teach themselves. No point comparing him to anybody else for he was so far out on his own trip nobody could copy, not even himself, and that's why he never practiced.

The original Can't Explain and My Generation off Live at Leeds are absolute hightlights for me, especially Live at Leeds. There are only three instruments and vocals, listen to it on youtube - how can there be so much noise. The clip below has a snippet of the set @ 5:37 nothing there except for four people and a few amps. THAT's how you make hard rock Misters Led Zeppelin! Oh and he came up with their name too.

Do you reckon there really is a such a thing as the greatest...?

I genuinely do. Firstly Bonham had a level of skill that meant he could play toe to toe with the very best jazz drummers had he chosen that genre. Secondly he had his own unique style that stood out from everyone else.

I really listen to the drums in a Zep song. They're a thing of awe to me.

Have you ever listened to the drums [and cymbals] on My Generation off Live at Leeds...? Remember, three instruments only, no backing tracks.

Start at 1:30 if you like...

Here's the drum track from Fool in the Rain. To me it's a song in it's own right*

* I once went to a Bill Brufford gig in the 80's when he'd got his first electronic tone drums. He really did play entire songs on a drum kit.

Compare that to 10:40 onwards from My Generation above...
Just listen to him, if you can keep up. :):)

This is live and towards the end of the concert, magic bus came after this, energiser batteries have nothing on this guy!

And then when the noise stops the people clap, it is almost deafening is the silence of people clapping.

Then check out Magic Bus! You can't compare the guy to anyone, it just isn't fair.

And The Who wrote their own stuff. :):)

Another great that I enjoy listening to is Artimus Pyle. Compare his drumming to the modern take on LS, it's just not there...

For Bonham try Knebworth 79, Archilles Last Stand, he just takes over the stage in places, pushing Jimmy every inch of the way....

Actually I've got it on now - have to say it's there isn't it, absolute power drumming at its finest. I'd forgotten about that performance - sorry.
