A few SLK (R171) questions

I'm potentially on the search for a SLK (R171), specifically the 350 model. I've a few questions:

- Was there a facelift/engine upgrade in 2008. As 2008 cars are listed as 305bhp, whereas earlier ones 272bhp, or is this an Autotrader typo?

- Are the exhaust tips on all SLK350 >2008 cars rectangular?

- Is there a rear panel (diffuser) missing in this car?

Don't know about an R171, but on an R172 the exhaust tips are rectangular, and there should be a diffuser fitted (I don't think the rear of an R171 should be too different)

Regarding the engine, from Wikipedia's entry on the M272:

The E35 is a 3.5 L (3498 cc) version. Bore dimension is 92.6 mm and stroke is 86 mm. Output is 272 PS (268 hp/200 kW) at 6000 rpm with 258 ft·lbf (350 N·m) of torque at 3500 rpm. A direct injected variant debuted in 2006 under the name Stratified-Charged Gasoline Injection (CGI). First fitted to the CLS350 CGI, it produces 292 PS (288 hp/215 kW) and 269 ft·lbf (365 N·m) of torque while lowering fuel consumption. In 2008, the non-CGI engine was uprated to 306 PS (302 hp/225 kW) at 6500 rpm and 265 ft·lbf (360 N·m) of torque at 4900 rpm. This was achieved by raising the rev-limit to 7200 rpm, increasing the compression ratio and other modifications to the valvetrain.

You need a V8 in your life Will! But if you must have a V6, this one looks quite nice (and in the best colour, of course..), if a little light on toys.

Looks the same as your 08 350
And yes there was a facelift around that time. The 350 went up from 272bhp to 305bhp

Angie owned a 2009 R171 350, so this comes from direct knowledge.

Yes, the later cars are 305bhp rather than 272bhp and its noticeable. The later engines produce their peak power at slightly higher rev's and the motor feels quite "cammy" to drive. It really howls on full chat at the top end

Yes

No

Also the MY2009 (2008 onwards) definitely don't have the balance shaft issues.

We have an 09 plate R171 SLK350, makes a lovely noise for a V6 with the roof down.

Here is the rear of ours, and it is totally standard.
