There have been several threads about Magnetic fuel conditioners and Grav888 sells "proper kits" to those who are interested. So I have been taking an interest in this area not least of all because my car in this cold weather does 25mpg or less. (Last tank was 24.9mpg!)

Being a cheap skate I saw an advert for a Magnetic Fuel saver for £5!! and ordered one.

It arrived today, and if basically a self adhesive bending magnet with a plastic clip to hold it on.

I was at Brabus Kent for my Spring Pads and asked if they could show which pipe to fit it on to. They actually fitted it and said they have seen all sorts of similiar devices ranging from my one to wired in electro magnets, but that people claim they work.

We shall see if something costing £5 actually works. It would be a incredible but they claim great things for it. If it works I'll have to get a hat to eat!

Edit: in the photo you can see the plastic clip sticking up from the right hand fuel pipe.

What is that supposed to do? Call me a skeptic, but since there's nothing metal in the fuel, how can a small magnet affect the fuel?

.............I am sceptical as well BUT I have a house whose water softener is magnetic and we never get scale in the bath even though our water area is solid chalk?

I'll try and find the research claims...

Being a plumber I have installed numerous of these devices.
The theory behind magnetic water softeners is to pass the flow of water in the pipes through a magnetic field. This allegedly changes the electrical charge of the ions in the hard water so that the minerals cannot form lime scale.
Of course they do not actually soften the water just make the water behave like soft water.
You need a much more expensive and elaborate unit to soften water.

Still can't immagine how that would work with fuel. Allign the ions in the fuel? impossible, there is no water, its petroleum based. The only metal which might come to mind would be traces of lead, but thats not affected by magnetic fields. Keep us updated R2D2, if it works, I still have some cylindrical magnets from 80mm PC fans which might come in handy:P

If these things do work, You would think the manufactuers would fit them as standard, As fuel consumption is a big selling point.

You beat me to it, those were my thoughts exactley. Also, even if it could affect it, that little strip magnet for £5 would have an extremely weak field.

Ha ha - me too :o Mine arrived end of last week.

No matter - I wasnt going to try it for a second - Whilst I dont actually doubt that these things may work the one that arrived is as weak as a magnet could be.

I look forward to the 'test results' with baited breath but meanwhile I have returned mine ( recorded delivery for 80p) to M99 in accordance with their return details on their website.

I must admit I thought I was going to get a decent magnet - even for £5! Ah well 'a fool and some of his money . . .'

Just another idea... if one wanted to make a better field, as R2D2 said, an electromagnet would be ALOT better, goto maplins, buy a reel of 100m of bell wire (or thinner), diconnect the hose, pass it through the reel and finally connect that to a power source.... LOL :P

Frequently Asked Questions :

Q. Will the Fuel Saver Max void my new car warranty ?
A. No. Since Fuel Saver Max is a retro-fit device, it will not void your vehicles warranty. This applies to all after market or retro-fit devices such as remote car starters or stereos, etc.

Q. What is it made from ?
A. It is a custom sealed neodymium super inductor that generates a frequency resonance between its faces.

Q. What makes the Fuel Saver Max so unique ?
A. Operates on the principle of resonance, utilizing a double chamber frequency with phased frequency modulation.

Q. The Fuel Saver Max sounds too good to be true !
A. With financial and environmental pressures, it is hard to believe this technology is not used by everyone - Hopefully in time it will be. However, millions of units have already been sold in over 70 countries. With petrol and diesel prices at their highest point since the early 1970's the product is now selling very rapidly. We are offering you the opportunity to save money and help the environment every time you drive.

Q. What is a hydrocarbon ?
A. It is the hydrogen and carbon content of the fuel.

Q. Will the Fuel Saver Max increase my vehicles performance ?
A. Yes, customers world wide have reported higher performance on their vehicles.

Q. Is the Fuel Saver Max easy to fit ?
A. Yes, The device will take less than 2 minutes to fit. Most vehicles have two fuel lines running in parallel between the fuel tank and the engine, a supply line and a return line. The Fuel Saver Max must be fitted to the supply line, as close as possible to the carburetor or fuel injection system.

Q. What type and size of fuel pipe can the Fuel Saver Max be installed on ?
A. It will work with all types of pipe ! - Metal, plastic or rubber. The Fuel Saver Max will also fit any diameter of pipe.

Q. Do I need more than one Fuel Saver Max for fuel injected systems?
A. Only 1 unit is required per engine.

Q. Do I need to adjust my carburetor, or make any other engine adjustments ?
A. No, you do not have to make any adjustments.

Q. When should I check my mileage and when can I expect results ?
A. Make sure you check your mileage before you install the Fuel Saver Max. Mileage is the sum of the total miles driven divided by the amount of fuel used. We suggest that you drive 500 miles and then make your before and after comparisons.

Q. Why 500 miles ?
A. This allows the Fuel Saver Max to do it's job of removing the carbon and varnish deposits. Remember it took thousands of miles to build up these deposits in your engine.

Q. How much improvement can I expect ?
A. This depends on the size and type of the engine, mode of driving whether city or highway, and the weather conditions. Fuel savings of up to 27% have been reported. In addition, increased performance and a lower operating temperature of the vehicle will be noted.

Q. How does the Fuel Saver Max clean the engine ?
A. Your engine builds up carbon and varnish deposits because of Incomplete combustion (improper burning). Molecules that are non homogeneous are found in both Petrol and Diesel Fuel. As these molecules begin to cluster and grow, some molecules become trapped during combustion, air is unable to reach the trapped molecules and they do not burn completely. Instead they are expelled into the atmosphere or are retained as carbon / varnish deposits inside your engine. The Fuel Saver Max literally breaks the cluster of molecules apart allowing more Oxygen to reach the individual molecules and produce a more complete combustion.

By importing this product direct from the USA we can offer the Fuel Saver Max at just a fraction of it’s £39.99 RRP price. Comes complete with easy to understand fitting instructions"

Time will tell!

I had one of these on my old ford escort. It was a proper big chunky magnet, you put the two halves of it around the fuel line and cable tied the ends together to hold it tight.

I think it helped a little bit, but pretty negligible - maybe 2%, and that could have just been some of the redex I used fairly regularly cleaning out the injectors.

kind of looks similiar doesnt it!

Well Ive just driven 10 miles and thefuel gaugehasnt movedso it  must work

Aren't we all missing the point. If one magnetic saves 27%......

Why not buy four and every week syphon a couple of gallons of the excess fuel out and sell it to recoup the costs!

What's the address?
