Because I'm bored just looked on the MB website for new E Class estate which I have no intension of buying as my 2015 350 has only 54K miles on it; but there seem to be no new ones.
Have they stopped producing them?

Edit:
Having waded through the MB site (is it me or is it ridiculously convoluted?), you may be right. The pricelist download only covers coupe and cab models.

"Old tech, mate. No demand for it. They all buy SUV's or EV's these days."

I think Mercedes are dropping estate cars full stop.....read that in Autocar a while back.....so may be inaccurate.

Shame if they do - i love my E Estate. I much prefer an estate to an SUV as you can tool along in it but still have plenty of space and comfort. I wouldn't want to do one of my typical Euro trips in an SUV. euughh.

Mercedes-Benz hints at uncertain future for estate models | Autocar

(As a BTW, it's a cliche of Auto journalism that journo's wax lyrical about how much they personally love estate cars but that the dealerships say that they can't sell them.)

The old story about the arrival of the first T-estate's is that Mercedes refused to make an estate version because they thought they would be used as "vans." Eventually they dipped their toe into the market and found that the demand outstripped supply, especially for the UK market.

I really struggle to see the point of SUV's. More weight, more unsprung mass, higher cog, larger frontal area. None of which I want when driving several hundred miles or when pitching me, the family and the luggage into high speed bends.

Also, I've never had the need to "see over a hedge", I've never had the urge to "dominate the urban jungle", I've never towed anything (and don't ever plan to do so) and the ability to go off road is utterly, pointless in the SE.

I think a lot of the fascination with SUVs is the perception of "safety". My Mam used to have that line of thought. My parents had a few Landrover Discoverys for years because they towed Caravans. My Mam was involved in pretty bad accident in the last one they had when an idiot in a van came round a bend on her side of the road. Whilst the Discovery was a write off the van was pretty much obliterated, the guy driving was lucky he wasn't killed. After that my Mam insisted on an SUV/crossover and got a Mazda CX7 despite no longer owning caravans. Purely on the basis that she felt more safe in a bigger car.

I think my Dad eventually managed to convince her that there was no need for an SUV and she happily drove a W204 until recently buying an A Class. I think a lot of people don't appreciate how far safety in cars has come and that there is a misconception that bigger is better/safer. Of course there is the small minority who buy them because the footballer's wives have them.

Its myth that 'you need an SUVto tow' , unless it's something really heavy like a horse box. I tow a caravan, and have done for well over 40 years and have NEVER felt the need for such beheomoths ! My current E220d estate performs the task more than capably.

Quite. (And my 27-year old 124 still performs the same duties for me!)

Ease of access can be a reason for an SUV i guess. My folks love my E but getting in and out is a bit more difficult the older they get (They drive a Nissan X-Trail currently).

Funny that, a few years ago I had arranged to take my partners mother and her sister up to Scotland for the week, they usually went by themselves in an elderly ML320 but age has got the better of them, we arranged to go with them as live in chauffeurs.

Just before we were due to go, I took my partners mother to town in my brand new E Class 220d estate.

Huhh! she commented as we drove along the road, is this what we are going to Scotland in?

You will have to drive the ML I can't see anything out of this she exclaimed!

And I did, it was bloody awful!

People

A lot of it is successful marketing.......they have made the public perceive that an SUV is "cooler" than an estate car. But it most of the owners were honest what they actually need is an estate car! I read recently that the trend towards bigger heavier less efficient SUVs meant that any carbon and pollution saved by the EV lot is being more than made up for by all the extra SUVs!!

If I could find a boot that is large enough for my two big dogs and enough luggage for a two week road trip on the back seat I'd happily go back to an estate.

Even in my last s212 E class estate it was a tight squeeze.

I feel my ML is just perfect for my individual needs.

You sound like a typical motoring journalist.
