Recently on checking the brake pads on the ML at 27000 miles, I was very pleasantly surprised to find that the pads were less than 50% worn. I am told that 27000+ miles on original pads in a ML is probably some sort of record. Also on checking oil level, no topping up was necessary. I actually cannot remember the last time I had to add oil. The last service was over 1 year ago and the indicator shows next service due in 7000 miles. Shell Ultra seems to have something going for it. While I do not go in for racy starts, the ML is usually driven 'briskly'.

Splendid. Shell Helix Ultra is a full synthetic and fit for the purpose.

Sadly, same cannot be said for their marketing, which seems to rely on public ignorance. They "relaunched" their entire oil product range a little while ago and I read this:

"Based on the theme ‘Give your car that just serviced feeling’, the marketing campaign taps into the emotional ties that exist between drivers and their cars, rather than relying on their technical knowledge of engines."

Oh good. we will just stick anything with "Shell" on the front in and all will be well because we feel better about it.

Given the problems that can be caused by using incorrect spec. oil I find that really quite annoying as well as stupid. But then it is a Monday morning and Mr Grumpy is in the building
