Hi guys,

i have a 190E 2.5-16. the roof rails, and the frame of the rear windscreen and a strip at the front all have this bronze colour effect to them.

my question is, was the car shipped like this? or just through the passage of time the lacquer has oxidised leaving this bronze finish?

I think mine were the same when I bought my 190, it was about 4 years old at the time..when I sold it at 17 years old it was still the same, (and it didn't have much rust either)

my question is though...did these cars ship with two options...bronze and black?

I don't know if it helps, but my 1990 300ce has the same colour bronze chrome moulding strips, as you descibe, apparently, (I was told by a dealer), that this was changed from Silver Chrome in '88.

It didn't go down too well, so I've been told.

Cheers, Bill.

silver chrome was used on the w201's and w124's until the 1st facelift which was 1989 on w201 and 1990 on the w124 where the silver chrome was changed to a darker shade of chrome. this continued until end of production i believe. i quite like it to be honest.

ahh making sense now...so this darker shade of chrome quite possibly can fade over time to reveal this bronze colour that most 190e's have right now?

the reason i ask is because im getting my rear screen replaced and the colour of the mouldings is black...the rest as in roof rails, quarter panel window seperator's are all bronze!

It is "black chrome", also found on pre-facelift W202 elegance models on the window sills. This was changed to an inferior plastic version on the facelift W202 which has no bronze effect at all.

hi Shude, yes its black anodised chrome...
im guessing post 1990 190e's were all shipped this way but over time faded to bronze...
i could be wrong though!

I have it on mine, as seen surrounding the front screen:

Not the clearest picture of it though.

Just thought I would join in, here's a not too clear pic of the colour of my trim, sorry, very dull here today.

Yes, mine are the same .... i like it , although mine have what look like 'water stains' on them , and i can't get it off.....

OT, remember in the early 90's when it was cool and showed your car was sporty to have the chrome 'black anodised' a la early AMG models...

Well being a poor penniless student instead of a poor penniless lock keeper, i devised a plan ... a hot air gun and some insulation tape !! did the whole of my golf cabrio, needed replacing once a year but looked cool and cost 49p a year to do !!
