1999 SLK Kompressor and a Honda CRV (the latter gone but not forgotten)
On Saturday, I washed, polished and generally titivated the outside of my little green car to within an inch of its life, then drove 30 miles round trip to a lovely garden centre.

Yesterday it rained heavily and I was pleased to see the water beaded up quite nicely. For seventeen years old she really did look nice outside.

Today I needed to get one of the fleet cars valet end inside because the seats were stained by the previous driver. Got a recommendation from the mechanic who did some minor work, so took it to the A6 Valentine place on, you guessed it, the A6. Whilst there, explained that I was struggling to get the inside of my little car really clean as I'd parked under trees with the top down recently, could they sort it? They could, £20 for the fleet car and £12 for mine.

Went to get my car, they only accept cash (silly me), I asked if I left my passport could I pop to the cash point? No need to leave passport. Anyway, here is where the nice bit happens...

Parked her near the cash point and a lady came up to me and said how lovely my car was, especially the colour. I mentioned that the colour, although an MB colour, was thought to be unique in the UK on this model. A few more pleasantries exchanged and I mentioned it is 17 years old. This lady exclaimed that she thought it was new! Admittedly, not everyone knows the two bonnet bulges are now gone from this model along with other changes, but what a nice thing to say!

Absolutely made my day. And the interior clean is very nice, I may take it there again as although I enjoy doing the outside and the dash and so on, the central console I find difficult to get really clean. Now feel this car is completely mine since it's so tidy.

Its always nice when someone complements your car. Makes you think, yeah, I bought the right one.

It certainly is, particularly when the little car dates from the previous century! She's like Marmite, you either love her or hate her because of the colour. Check colour just called to me, doubt I would have bought her in most other colours. Yellowstone, perhaps, and there's a nice bright blue one in our village, same vintage but post facelift.

Isn't it funny what autocorrect does to my two references to 'valeting' in my first post?

Can't beat the feel good factor Lisa.

Ant.

P.S. Do you always carry your passport on you? Just in case you have to flee the country at the drop of a hat?

Yes, both of them Ant. Nature of my work, though since 2010 I haven't had a call asking me to get on a plane to South Africa pronto, I'm pleased to say... Habit now. In the next while I'm planning to visit number one son and his lovely wife in Dubai (there is no number two) and next year going for a visit to my home town or some other area of the US, unless I go this year, though my holidays is year are pretty much arranged now.
