Hi All

Have now restored the e220 cabriolet, I have the chance of buying a c230 kompressor 98 60k miles.

All the hood gremlins as per my previous threads have now been resolved with the purchase of a new cst from mercs ouch !

I would like to fit the engine to the original gearbox etc

Has any one completed this conversion before ? Is there a sticky anyone knows of?

Many thanks in advance

It's too complicated a job with a later model kompressor as the ECU is tied in to the keyfob. I think if you went for a pre-97 car which was a pre-facelift W202 you might (and I use that term loosely) find it easier to transplant.

Have you fitted one before? What mods have you done to your car?

Thanks

I have 2 W202s, one is off the road currently while I do some stuff to it. One is a pre-facelift, 4 speed, soon to have a mosselman turbo fitted to it. The other is a facelift, later model w202 which has the electronic 5 speed gearbox. The mods I have done to the pre-facelift one are listed in my signature line under modifications. The problem with cars like yours and mine, although the engine is the same M111 block, the electronics are different so they are far from plug and play. I have also considered an engine transplant, but was advised against the 230K engine in my car, simply from a cost point of view. Although I havent fitted one, I have been told it wouldnt necessarily run right. The later model cars have a different type of key fob, so if you were to get a kompressor engine, it would need extensive retrofitting of the ignition barrel and even then there's no guarantees that it will start let alone run correctly.

Pre-facelift cars didnt have an electronic key fob and it may be easier to transplant an engine from say a 96 or early 97 car if you can find one and if you have your heart set on it. The other option to go for, if you want more power is fit a turbo to it, though you may need to fabricate a manifold either yourself or from a specialist. With the engine transplant you're thinking about, its really not that easy unless you discuss it in detail with someone. I'm not an expert, so dont take what I write as gospel.

Others on here may say its possible. Try and find out every pro and con to doing it. Is it just a matter of extracting more power by using a different engine? WHat can be done to yours? Then if you fancy the challenge, take the plunge, but bear in mind that it will be expensive unless you take the time to do the work yourself and have an idea of what is correct and what is not.

A turbo sounds good! What sort of cost would be associated - I could do a lot of the work myself and what power gains would a 2.2 give

Thanks

A turbo, you're looking at around 1.5 to 2.5k just to get all the necessary kit to be fitted. This may be more depending on how much power you want to get out of it. You could get around 200 hp out of your engine, maybe more if you're willing to change components like pistons, boring/polishing out the block etc.

You're looking at costs for:
1. A manifold - you will need to fabricate one as Mosselman dont make them any more and a ready to fit kit including other bits are available for 2.5k
2. Intercooler
3. Pipework (unless you're buying an all in one kit)
4. Extra injector(s)
5. Fuel Pressure regulator
6. Copper head gasket to reduce compression for the turbo to work
7. Injector driver, wideband oxygen (lambda) sensor and gauge
8. Piggy back ECU set up to control the extra fueling
9. Tubing and other associated fixtures and fittings which I havent mentioned

As I said Mosselman dont do the kit any more but a company called torque developments (Torque Developments International | Experts in Performance Tuning and Racing) sell the kit for various M111 engine types. As your engine block is the same as mine it will bolt on but will need tweaking if you want to get top performance out of it.

Thanks for your input
Is your car running with the turbo yet?

If it's more BHP you're after, surely it would be easier and cheaper to transplant a 6cyl engine from another w124? a 3.0 24v m104 without cats puts out 231bhp and a 3.2 24 with cats 221 bhp. Either engine is readily available used and were used in the w124 so all the parts for the job are available. The only disadvantage is the 6cyl makes the car slightly more nose heavy, but then a w124 is never going to be great in the handling stakes anyway, especially a cab.
