Pleas Kindly Help

Do you have acess to a ramp?

If you don't it a very difficult. The labour time for it is 4 hours and you will need all of that if it's your first one.

The engine has to be dropped at the rear aswell as the subframe to gain acess.

let the record show that starters can be done without removing the engine on 168 petrol and diesel cars.

the subframe does need to be lowered at the rear by removing 8x bolts and loosening 2x bolts at front. this can be done on a lift with a heavy duty transmission jack. it is still very fiddly, but avoids the endless complication of engine/transmission/subframe removal on these ageing cars.

it usually takes me up to 2 hrs.

So the labour bill is probably higher than the starter cost:eek:

Yep. As Alexander says there is no need to remove the engine just lower the rear of it.

Well Guys ....I need help............IS their anyone who have tried to change Starter motor from Inside of car.. I mean creating a hole in floor..If answer is yes...Could you please guide me to exact location where I should chop...........any photos available will help..

that would be like doing a filling from the back of your skull.

myself and blackc55 have posted the best method, read again, or do you not have a jack and axle stands?

alexander.......I have no jack ( Heacy duty for transmission ) I only have axle 2 stands

Fed up now

Well...now I have decided to take the car to garage and let experts do the job and tried to jump start the car..I was able to do it couple of days back but today it refused to start.......Dashboard shows a message "Start Error"..now what the hell is it..does this means something else has gone now................please help................

I think it would help if you listened to the people you asked the question of.

The starter can be changed from the engine bay BUT there is a lot of work and you need good tools If you haven't got a jack then I doubt your are a DIY mechanic, I suspect also there are also tools you have not got. like a set of 'Torx' sockets?

Your idea to get it done in a garage in these circumstances I feel is a wise one,

Try your second key If you have one or re-synchronise the one you are using
all the details are on my site but YOU have to read it. Your car is a w168 the layout for the starter is the same for all models

Lofty's homepage. A-class info, Mercedes Benz 'A' Class W168 W169, Holidays in Scotland, Home Wine making, Kittens to Cats', Solar panels PV, Canada Rockies, Orchids, .Alaska 2015, Solar Thermal, How to look after you Orchid plants,

either way good luck

Perhaps I should have looked at the date when this question was posted, 6 years ago!
I bet the car is scrap by now? Either way my answer remains the same.

Welcome back Lofty! I have often linked to your excellent website in answering W168/W169 questions posted here. Do you still run a W169? The only real successor to the W169 would be the present B class or have you jumped ship?

Thanks for the welcome.
Yes I have the w169 which I like, wisely I waited until they had modified some of things a detested about the car the barbed wire Ariel for one.

The self parking I love, but it doesn't pay to think about what it would cost if it went defective.

The eco start is also great but it does take a while before you stop wondering if it will restart when required .
So far I pleased with my new baby benz.

All visitors are welcome to visit my site, but a bit more support would be welcome .
Now have the e-DVD with masses of workshop files.
Best wishes

Hi Lofty

We've just gone from w168 to w169 , a very different car I must say

I have been beaten already by the sidelight bulbs. I just cannot get my fingers onto them to give them the quarter turn !

Access panels in the arches are only for the indicator bulbs

Same here - got my A200 five months ago ...

Currently in a shop having the wobbly rust, I mean weld, and few other small things sorted ... good job it's only two doors :thumb:

Will need to buy the new eDVD to update my old one, as it was only W168 on it.
