What effect (if any) would changing the air filter have?

Piece of mine that it has been done ?

The satisfaction of seeing the MB holographic logo on the air filter box ?

Depends how dirty the old one is. Changing it for a fresh one can only be a good thing though.

How easy is it to change?

old one pops out, new one pops in? or is that wishful thinking?

Never done one on a A-Class, but yes it's pretty much that simple. Sometimes a spring clip or plastic clip, and sometimes a bolt or torx, but always easy.

If it's a torx-type fastener then you'll need the appropriate 'tool', which aren't often included in cheaper socket sets, and the female "star socket" looks like this:

Edited to add: it might be worth buying a set as they're used all over the place on modern MBs, and so sure to come in handy again.
