Could any A class owners please confirm what sort of MPG figures, I checked on the trip today and it gave an average of 31mpg which is very poor, car has only done 4000 mile so far and is an auto?

What sort of driving do you do?

Wifey's 180 averages 45-50 on a motorway run @ a constant 75mph. Round town, normally gets about 40-42.

These A class CDI engines seem to take a while to bed in before the economy improves. We boughts ours at just under 5k, now at 19k and mpg much better than when we first had it.

There was, apparantly, an issue with the gearbox software which was dealt with by anMB recall - has it had this?

Remember, mpg is relative to your style of driving, load, speeds etc

Oh, don't rely totally on the trip computer either! Work out your mpg using the fill/empty/fill method!!

Perhaps 4000 miles from new and coming out of winter is a bit soon to be worrying about economy....

I would think that the engine isn't fully run in yet, and the diesel formulation for winter isn't great for economy either.

Be concerned if it isn't up somewhat after 10000 miles and a nice warm (hmm) summer.

Wife's 180 with 8500 mls does around 33 mpg in town and 45 mpg on the motorway.

Most accurate fuel consumption calculation is not using fill/empty/fill but a much easier method by filling up and using mileage-to-tank (number of litres for travelled km/mls) calculation. This way you can do the calculation on only one tank.

Wow! That is amazing. My brother regularly averages over 60mpg from his A160cdi and I could get over 50mpg from my A180cdi auto.

The engine will be tight but I think you must either be in awful traffic or enjoying the right foot! Try one longish drive when you are determined not to depress the accelerator more than one inch (25mm). Makes a whole lot of difference.

Get engine warm and then press reset button to show mpg once the engine is warm.

If problem persists you may have a faulty mpg computer (I had one and they changed it). On a long run, fill the tank, drive a long way, refill the tank. See how many miles done and how many litres used. Divide litres by 4.55 to get number of gallons. This will show you if the computer is reasonably accurate or not.

You will get at least 60mpg on a run (cruising at 70!) once the engine loosens up.

I have an A160 CVT and have just done a trip around Cumbria and Northumberland, two up, boot absolutely chock bang full, two mountain bikes behind the front seats, and it never dipped below 43mpg and was closer to 50mpg most of the time. A brim to brim fuel check revealed 46mpg for the first 400 miles of the trip - motorway, local roads and stop/start whilst plodding around. Generally I find my trip computer is slightly pessimistic compared to checking the figures manually. Hope that helps?

I had an A180 CDI Auto for 2 weeks and the E220 CDI did more MPG than it.

Really disappointed with the mpg figures of it.

It all turns on how you drive it. If you missed the power of the 220cdi you may have been too enthusiastic with the right foot. We drove to Spain and back in a 180cdi automatic and averaged about 47 mpg on the whole trip with lots of sightseeing etc. Many days we did over 50 mpg.

Eldest daughter also has one and she also regularly gets over 50 mpg.

Ok , motorway journey.

Glasgow to harrogate , 3 people up and cruise set to the speed limit of the road so 60/70.

A180 CDI = 38MPG
E220 CDI = 44MPG
E320 CDI = 43MPG

Same journey , roughly same temps and dry weather. That was over a round trip of 430 miles for them all and included 1 toilet stop each way.

I back this statement too. I had an A170CDi Auto AvantG (i think it was a 170) for two days while mine was being worked on and only achieved 33mpg as an average. It was mostly stop start usage but I regularly get 37mpg in my E220CDI manual AvantG on the same cycle.

Maybe it's a result of me having to drive it harder to maintain the same driving style, which isn't excessive or hard. Rather disappointing for such a small car.
