New member and mechanically ignorant. I wonder if someone could give me a few potential options for this . . . I have had a very slowly progressing rattle (started last august) that is now getting increasingly, well, rattly! It doesn't happen when the engine is cold, only warm and generally after a 50m or so journey.
The A160 I have is automatic. The rattle happens when the car is in low revs and just before or after a gear change when there's a fair bit of vibration. Classic is coming off the motorway, going round a roundabout and just as I exit and the auto box moves from 2nd to 3rd and over 30mph I get a metallic rattle. Lifting off the accelorator and / or changing into neutral kills the rattle - so it isn't brakes or steering.
Perhaps interestingly, if I knock the gears down so the revs are higher and the gear lower, the rattle goes. It does seem to be a vibration rattle at low revs coinciding with a gear change.
If I had a manual, I'd say I was changing gears too early.
I have no other obvious gearbox problems - it always selects gear fine, no odd noises at high revs. The car is fantastic otherwise.
Interested to know whether this is leading to total gearbox failure, or something less expensive???
