I'm told by the main dealer who has my car in for a service that I have a leak in the air con condenser, apparently it looks like a stone or something has hit it. Quoting £1250 to replace and re-gas .... seems a tad to much to me. What would reasonable sort of price be?

I don't have the part number to check the price but if anyone can my VIN starts WDD2074732F ...

Two Part numbers for a condenser. Unfortunately, no price on the EPC I have.

Cheers ... I'll do some searching and get a price.

Just bought OEM one £159 plus vat From main dealer

bought a reman of ebay first £99 Was OK but decided with the OEM.

i think the reason for the quote will be mainly for the labour, a lot of work to get to it at least on a Vito.

Could you try some specialists for the work? I've recently had work done at a specialist that only does aircon and their knowledge is amazing. I had a slight leak which was traced and fixed for £100 including a full regas, I dread to think what MB would have made of it. The place I use is nowhere near you but hopefully there'd be someone good round your way?

OK ... update on this,

Booked it with my local Indy, Nick Webster in Poynton, who quoted between £550 (pattern part) and £800 (MB part) depending on the quality of the condenser. Car went in, pattern part wasn't going to fit so I agreed to go with the MB part.

They called me back an hour later to ask who had told me the condenser actually needed replacing as they could see anything obviously wrong with it!!!!

They re gassed it and charged £80 odd quid for that and the time they spent investigating it. Four weeks and 500 miles later it still blowing cold.

So that's £720 still in my pocket, or £1150 if I'd gone with the main dealer, and three vehicles I own that are never going near LSH Auto Mercedes again !!

F@ck dealership!

It's great there's honest garages not robbing customers. :thumb:

I don't know what's involved in replacing the condenser on your car but if it's anything like the Volvo I had previously it entails removing a fair bit of the front end of the car, so you can see why it's a relatively expensive job involving a fair bit of disassembly. I got quoted 700 quid from a Volvo dealer to do the job so I bought a pattern condenser for 120 quid & replaced it myself. The engine coolant radiator had to come off as well. An afternoon's work & luckily I'm in the refrigeration / airconditioning trade so was able to recharge it myself. I think in your case it was simply a recharge needed as the refrigerant leaks out over time through the compressor drive shaft seals, depending on use / condition & or quality of that seal.
