A209 Fuel Smell

I have a 2005 CLK Sport 3.0 V6, which has been off the road for some time. It's now back on the road, but has developed a smell of fuel, inside and outside of the car. I only get the smell when the engine is running, and if I switch on the air re-circulation, the smell disappears. I'm certain that the smell is coming from the engine bay (not the fuel tank), but it all looks pretty dry. Any suggestions? Thanks

mine was leaking from an old fuel filter at the rear left i wouldnt use the car until fixed fire hazard
