Dear All,

I do hope someone may be able to help or explain what this maybe apart from a mechanic saying that sounds like 2500 pounds please.

i have what i would discribe as a metalic grinding noise which increases under load, it is present in all gears but not present when the clutch is depressed. it has progressively got worse over the last 1000 miles. the car however has not lost any oil, fuel economy or power, and there is no shuddering in any of the gears with the gearbox still feeling tight.

has anybody got any suggestions what this maybe.

many thanks

I suggest you get it on a rolling road.
From underneath, it may well be obvious what the problem is.
Could be engine or gear-box mounts worn causing mis-alignment of prop shaft.
I would check it out urgently before something goes bang and causes a whole lot of damage.

engine and gearbox mounts

do you recommend i take it to a MB dealer or an independant?, also are you aware if the engine and gearbox oils are seperate or together. If seperate would you recommend changing gear box oils.

Sounds like intup shaft bearings. When gear engaged it puts load on gearbox and it makes noise at the same time. When you press clutch it takes pressure of gearbox and at the same time of internals of gearbox and noise goes away.

Get your car on a lift and see if it comes of gearbox then you might know.

A210 is front wheel drive so no prop-shaft.

As has already been stated it sounds as if it could be an input shaft especially if its making a grinding noise....thrust bearing would be more of a low rumble.

Where do you live in the country....I know of an excellent gearbox specialist.

If it is a gearbox issue and the noise is as bad as you say..Get some oil out of the box and introduce it to a magnet. Swarf = trouble. If none, a proper oil analysis will tell you exactly the state of play. If clean bill of health then gearbox is eliminated as culprit.
