AA trying it on! 🤬

The down side of insurance breakdown cover is for car only.
Free standing breakdown you are covered not the car.
It does not matter whose car you are in you are covered.
What do you mean by ‘insurance breakdown cover’? We had personal cover for years with the RAC, now the AA through our Travel insurance with Nationwide. When you have more than one car it’s essential. Imagine trying to get car-specific cover for my 3 wheeler kit car…

They all use independent sub-contractors. Mobilo is now operated by RAC and the odds are that you’ll get an independent contratcor (especially if you need recovery).

The only time that an MB trained mechanic are the few occasions I’ve insisted due to the type of car and nature of the fault, and said I was happy to wait until the following day.
I've posted before re Mpbilo - I think it was 2022, the fuel flap filler jammed closed - it had been a hit-and-miss opening the thing for a long time before.

I often fill up when there is a third to quarter min left in the tank. The flap refused to open at the petrol station - got back home rang the Mobilio, initially fobbed off with "take the car to the dealer." I rang the dealer they had 4 4-week wait.It was agreed the mobilo van would come out next day - we agreed a pm time and hlf an hour call before the visit. The man came and replaced the actuator. The thing jammed again at about 12/13 months - Mobilio came out next day and replaced FoC this time as 2 2-year warranty given. The first time the flap stuck, it was agreed that Mobilo rather than AA should come out.
The item cost just over 40 quid and I guess I saved over 200 quid at least by not going to the dealer.

We got the car from new only 22k miles FSH by MB - but this year going to a non MB - posted about this on another thread and asked about breakdown cover - local Dartford branch about 965 quid - across the river, Lakeside MB was just over 200 cheaper but when I looked last night out of curiosity, they were about 5 quid more expensive.

I have a driver based policy for my wife and I though Green Flag, however there’s an age limit in the cars covered - I think it’s 16 or 17 years old - does yours have any age limit for the car?

Fair warning.

The AA definitely also uses contractors to cover peak periods and recovery.

Daughter in Law made the mistake of running an ICE motor whose gearbox failed on her. Long delays in getting the AA contractor out - in Wimbledon - and then to get the wretched thing recovered to a garage. An £8k reconditioned gearbox replacement ensued, on a car that had only done 60k miles.

Don't get that kind of problem with an EV.
Similarly expensive failures can occur on any car even an EV has a transmission as well as other complex equipment fitted .

Was the car in question a Nissan by any chance?

They are rather renowned for early failure of the CVT transmission

Is part of car insurance if you tick the right box around 80£ extra last time.

BMW X3 diesel, made in Spartanburg. It seems that gearboxes need oil inside them to run past 60,000 miles.

Allegedly they had no warning signs of trouble.

We switched to the AA specifically because others wouldn't cover our Vito or my SL (both of which were excluded on age by others).

If you have a caravan the other thing to watch out for is that many have a restriction on the maximum length of caravan (or trailer) that they will recover if you break down when towing. Our relatively modest single axle 4-berth is over the limit for a lot of companies.

The last thing anyone wants is a motor that lasts for ever, eh?

You would have thought that the leaking fluid would have been
noticed and that the transmission would have reported some fault!

That’s the reason I keep our Mayday policy, as it covers longer caravans. That said I’ve not towed it for several years now.
