Good Morning!

I have literally just signed on to this forum having been referred here following a search. I currently have an Audi 2.5tdi which is 9 years old and has 103k on the clock. Not worth a lot now, but is in superb condition and has been very well looked after. However I have a very good friend in the trade who has offered me an R regd C250TD, which has auto and air con that the Audi doesnt have, for a very good price. 79k miles and full MBSH. For the money, £6.5k, it sounds too good to miss. Two points occur to me having had a quick look at this extremely well informed site. MPG doesnt look too hot with these cars, I get 45-50 from the Audi and the MB looks more in the thirties. There is more to life than MPG especially for the pleasure of owning such a nice car, but I would be interested in feedback on this point. Secondly the local dealers are not well thought of by colleagues who own MBs, and I am tempted to use a reliable independant. Does anybody know of or can recommend somebody in the Bedford/Milton Keynes/ Northampton area? (apologies in advance if such specifics offend the site rules) I am hoping to view the car on Sunday and anticipate doing the deal then.

Thanks in advance for your patience on what I am sure are well aired topics.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

I have a C250TD estate and am very pleased with it. You wont get the same MPG as a Audi or VW but the performance and comfort is very good. Expect to get mid thirties as an average and higher on long trips.

Make sure the car starts OK from cold, evidently a faulty glow plug causes poor cold starting and whilst the plugs are cheap enough the labour to change them is not.

Mine has done 70K miles and I have cleaned the inlet system, intercooler and inlet manifold, although not strictly a problem it does get gundged up with oil, something to do with the engine breather sytem and EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) system. I also recently changed the auto gearbox fluid but that is more a preventative measure to avoid any future problems.

Basically the C250TD is a very strong engine and will last a long time if serviced regularly. Incidentally I 'chipped' mine with a tuning box to increase power. torque and MPG, worth considering if you like the car.

The dealers around here are not very 'helpful' , Evans of Leicester are superb but a bit out of your way. I could recommend a garage or mechanic in Kettering, although not MB specialists are very good at most things.

I used to have an Audi A4 1.9TDi and got 50mpg out of this pretty much constantly...

I've had my 250TD for three months now. The above poster is right you won't get the same mpg.

To be honest, I get about 32-33 mpg locally and 37-38 on a run. Not great for a Diesel but its a bloody great car.

Dead comfortable etc. Great ride and immense performance for a diesel...

The audi comparison works both ways. I used to have a C220 CDI, and regularly got 45ish MPG.

I now have a Audi A4 2.5 TDI Quattro, and have seem MPG as low as 19MPG, average on a tank 34MPG.....but it does go like stink :D

All depends on how you drive it I guess.

Many thanks for your helpful comments. I shall go and take a look at the car this weekend and hopefully it will meet my skyhigh expectations.

Thanks Velocette

I've also just (6 weeks) got a 250TD sport. No problems, MPG about 30, but AC always running !, and has been Superchipped, which gives me about 185BHP.

I use Paul White, who is based near Buntingford, but is a mobile Mechanic. He is cheap, through and good.
