Hi

I have a 2000 x E320 cdi . It has a classic ABS BAS warning lights. I changed the usual brake light switch, but still not cured. The lights come on when started from cold, and after the car has been on for 5 mins, you can switch off and restart the car and the lights go away, until the car has it;s next cold start. Does anyone have any advice on what I can look at. By the way I have 20 inch alloys on the car, which came with the car, could this cause the problem?

May be its a dodgy sensor (s) issue?

Replacing brake light swicth usually fixes the problem. Your best bet may be getting it plugged into STAR or get a fault code reader to get the error codes to diagnose the problem.

Not too sure about the ABS/BAS intermittent light - however having the wrong wheel/tyre conbination can play havoc with your crusie control as I found out with my S.

Just out of curiousity, what are the tyre sizes on your wheels ?

Is there anyway you can try a standard set of wheels on the car and see if it makes a diff ?

If you know a local independant they should be able to read any registered codes for you for a fee - £75 ish - could give you a good idea as to what the problem may be ?

the tyres are 225 35 20 and 235 45 20 on the rear.

They are massive. I am tyring to buy a set of 18 inch wheels.

I will take your advice and get MB to stick it on a Star.

Its most likely a wheel speed sensor, probably one of the rears (they seem to go more often), get it on STAR diagnostics and it will tell you which one is giving the incorrect reading.

Your tyres have a different rolling radius front to rear. This will definately cause a problem.

Are you sure these sizes are correct?

To match the fronts the rears need to be 235 30 20 or 235 35 20 depending onm the width of the rears compared with the front. Sorry I missed this before my previous reply, definatly check the tyre sizes.
Use this to calculate the difference between the fronts and rears
