Hi, wonder if anybody has had this problem before. My 2002 W220 S430 had an ABS warning indication on the dash, didn't worry to much about it and started by taking the wheels off to check integrity of sensors etc and give it a good clean. The ABS warning disappeared but when taking off from standing the car is making a right noise and now get a warning on dash (amber exclamation mark) traction I think, after you give it a bit more rev and it changes up a gear all is ok but for slow speeds in a car park or traffic queue its a nightmare. Was wondering if anyone has had the same experience or advice, as thought if its an ABS sensor it would still be giving me the fault indication.

Any suggestions would be a help as its an old car and not worth a blank cheque book but still in good condition well sort of.

Noise is coming from under bonnet at passenger side, think its the ABS kicking in only when in first gear. In the process now of checking the rear reluctor rings but proving a bit difficult in accessing them, hopefully get there in the end.

Why not get the codes read £40 @ your local indi, saves you time and ££££££££££ trouble shooting.

Managed to get the car checked out at local garage they informed no error codes were present but did advise the issues were caused due to parking brake being very coroded and sticking partially this was all fixed up and surprise surprise the traction control is still engaging whilst taking off in 1st gear albeit it doesnt seem as bad. I did get to see the parts which were changed out and they did look in terible state but problem still there and dont want to start throwing money at it.

Your either wheel spinning or the abs ring is cracked

100% no fault codes?

No definitely no fault codes, very strange only happens briefly as you take off. If you allow the car to take off without using accelerator pedal it never happens only when you press down on pedal the traction control comes on, if you lift your foot off the pedal as the traction control comes on and depress it the car is ok, likewise once you get over 10mph its fine. Really starting to be annoying been looking into if a problem with feedback from the pedal could cause this like deadband, as I would imagine if there is a problem with any abs sensor it would happen as soon as you pull away in first gear be it on cars own momentum.

Does the traction control take input from the ABS rings? - If so, I'd also suggest checking that you don't have a cracked one.

In the past I've been lucky and they were just cacked-up; a quick spray with some brake cleaner made the ABS light go out.

The front abs rings were dirty when I first got the car but these have been cleaned up. Unable to check rear reluctor rings as these are hidden by the wheel hub etc, all sensors were checked and cleaned as well. I would have thought if there was a problem with a sensor or 1 of the rings the abs light would be on all the time, as mentioned before abs light does not come on?

You need to drive the car monitoring actual values of all four wheels.

Managed to find a specialist located outskirts of Edinburgh, ran diagnostic and found one of the rear wheel reluctor rings were cracked. Replaced both sides not an easy job as witnessed by myself, car is running fine now, what a difference.
