Had my gearbox replaced at 26k miles on my A200 Turbo, new one has now gone at 45k miles absolute joke, where will Mercedes likely stand on this now that the service and maintenance contract is up?

They've taken it in and admitted it needs a replacement again, they are waiting to hear back from MB head office, trying to get the full replacement cost taken care of by MB, two gearboxes failing in 45k miles, can't believe it.

Dont give up, i had a new command & new SBC pump by being stubborn.

I don't think the boxes are that bad... something has been munching them up perhaps? If so the underlying problem needs to be found.

Car with Mercedes for 2 weeks and they respond that the goodwill department are refusing to pay anything....spoken to ignorant customer service team, now emailed Simon Oldfield hopefully will get some sense out of him. If they won't budge I will never buy one of their cars again, appalled!!!!

I completely empathise but it's not a huge surprise.

This is the 'new and improved' MB where they've really sorted out their customer service too.

Depending on where you live, I can recommend Wright Tech who are based in Sidcup. I would consult with them before you make any final decisions.

When I was researching my car, I had heard horror stories about new gearboxes costing £10K > £15K (I had no real way of substantiating at the time) but WT advised that very few gearbox issues write it off and cannot be resolved by way of a refurb from their specialist - which I think is in the order of £1500 although not sure if that is an E55-specific price or general.

They may even find the root cause rather than the useless monkeys you find yourself working with.

Actually, that's an insult to monkeys...

MB have gone to the traditional UK model of customer service. This should be renamed the payout reduction department.

Sad to see. Is an MB worth a premium nowadays?

Leave your car outside the dealership sign written with what they've done and said....

Interestingly the garage have now called to say that they made a mistake when submitting their claim and are re-submitting it, strange they say that after I emailed the head of customer services. I had refused to pick up the car too so it's sitting at the main dealer. I wait with interest, they have a chance to keep a customer or lose for life, they don't seem to really have a clue at the moment unfortunately!

You say that, but if you look at it from their point of view... the damage has already been done, and is, in reality, irreparable. Even if they do budge now, you have already (rightfully) formed an opinion regarding their level of customer service.

My only advice is keep insisting and involve MB UK directly if need be.

Some years ago I managed to get a goodwill payout from a car manufacturer (not MB) after writing to them directly saying that I was unhappy about being charged by the dealer for a repair on a car that was just one month out of warranty.

Trying to get the customer to pay first - wouldn't be the first time.

Only the finest companies try to rip you off by stuffing you on a massive bill, until they discover you wont pay up and then cough up begrudingly.

A model the finest master craftsman of customer service can only dream of...

They rang me today to say the gearbox has finally arrived and they noticed my sparkplugs need replacing and also a rubber on the driveshaft going into the gearbox or something? They saying they can reduce labour rates because the gearbox and engine are already outside the car and so quoted 102 pound for spark plugs and 157 for the driveshaft, does this sound worth getting done or are they trying to get a bit of money out of me?!

Sounds plenty to me considering the engine is out of the car and therefore easily accessible to fit new plugs, and also access to the driveshaft eased.

For a price comparison, ring another MB dealership and ask for a quote for the same work, (but with the car in one piece) you can then decide if you are getting a better price for the job while the car is disassembled.

Cheers everyone, car now fitted with new gearbox paid for by MB, thankfully!
