Does anyone know how where the small glass window is in order to check the level of gas in the aircon system. I know it is somewhere near the compressor but that is it.

Cheers

Here's mine, it's just behind the left headlight access cover, look for the hexagonal glass window. I don't know if yours is the same though.

It doesnt check the level though - it just allows you to see activity

There is no real way to check level without deep vacuum draining and refilling with the correct amount of refrigerant.

Even pressures can only give you an Idea of what is correct as the pressures, levels etc all change when the system is operated

The liquid you see in the window is the lubricant not the refrigerant. If you suspect a problem it is best to get the system recharged, the old gas is recovered and the system is recharged with the correct weight of gas. Most A/C engineers add a dye to the refrigerant that shows up under ultra violet light to aid the detection of any leaks.

Thanks all

I see what you mean Simon but even though mine is a W202 I do not have this window.

I am doomed, that and my previous thread "£1.000.000"lead to nothing. And I've just discovered that the C class is only 2 stars NCAP crash Test..................... I am selling it!

Nobody here is a airconditioning specialist/engineer, we have tried to give you advice on what is the likely problem. A/C problems are not a DIY fix, you will have to face it that you will have to pay for someone to fix it. Around here they charge about £60 for a check up and recharge. A recharge is not just a top up, the gas has to be recovered from the system and a fresh charge of a specific weight of gas is installed. It is not as simple as testing the pressure. The old gas is recovered, 'cleaned' and re-used.

As for the crash test rating, there is at least one member here who can say that his C-class probably saved his life and is glad he wasn't in a 'lesser' car.

If you do decide to sell it I am sure it will sell very quickly, good diesels are very hard to find at the moment, as long as it is an auto with aircondining (working).:D

Jimmy, you are not funny.

Fuzzer, don't do that, seatbelt actually saved my life years ago.

GDC200, where?

I will book a recharge next week, it is only £60 plus VAT so you never know. I think the car is going anyway, my wife saw TopGear and the crash rating and now our baby is one day late, I think she was scared and is now keeping him inside until we by something else.

Damn you BBC!

There are two scores. After the facelift in 1997 it got side airbags as standard which boosts up the points.

It is only 2 stars but I've heard loads of stories of people walking away from W202 RTA's so I'm not bothered.

I'm perfectly happy with the safety of the w202, I got out and walked away from this:

I don't recommend anyone else try it, rolling your car isn't the cheapest or safest of tests!
