Why does the accelerator pedal on a W209 (or other models for that matter) have what is best described as an extended travel?

Let me explain... if I press the accelerator to the floor... not that I do that while the car is in motion, you understand  it stops, but if pressed a wee bit more firmly, it kind of presses a button in the accelerator pedal body.

Now, its not an ejector seat or afterburner... so what is it?

It is the kickdown and basically tells the car to take the lowest gear possible and accelerate as fast as its legs will carry it.....

This button has a use only on cars with auto tranny!
For us with a manual one, it deactivates the cruise control when pressed :)
Not sure if the same thing happens with speedtronic but i think it does!

Sweeeet, does that work on a manual car also?
