Does anyone share my annoyance that in times of Government cuts, increased taxation, etc. we are subjected to a seemingly constant barrage of TV adverts and full pages in the press urging us to drive 5 miles less? I counted about 4 adverts with the long slow zoom out to a car exhaust and a frozen windscreen in less than 90 minutes of my TV viewing last night

How much must this be costing - any ideas?

This, along with other "climate change" related propaganda is not the best use of my tax.

Am I alone on this?

And they don't half bang on about switching the "standby " off. Why? In the old days standby was a mere convenience which didn't save electricity but merely allowed appliances to come on more quickly. Modern appliances, such as LCD tv use about 1-2 watts on standby and yet we are led to believe that if we turn it off we will save the planet.

Totally agree with you Palfrem. It's just the government wanting to say to the EU, "This what we're spending on the problem"

It's a known fact that switching electronic gear on and off reduces it's lifespan. So what about the effect of the cost of manufacturing the replacement on our carbon footprint? Ooh, that's another contentious issue!

Do the math as the Americans:D UK population approx 60million say 5 per family 12million families with only one tv each at 1.5 watts = 18million watts, then plus that up by the sky boxes or virgin boxes or the freeview boxes and video and dvd players surround sound systems etc etc

Do the math yourself. For instance when you go and make a cup of tea during the break in Corrie do you turn your TV off? If you do, well done. If you don't then those 5 minutes could use 16.67watts of electric assuming a 200 watt tv. If turned to standby @1.5watts then only .125 watts would be used or put another way. Those 5 minutes are the equivalent of leaving the tv on standby for 133.36 hours. Switching off standby is no longer a relevant energy saving point. As I said, in the old days it would not have mattered because standby used as much energy as if the appliance was fully on.
By the way 18 million watts is infinitesimally small compared to what the country uses.18,000,000 divided by 1000 is 18000 units. About what 3 houses use in a year. Do you still want me to do the math!!
Even if the average use of the tv was one per head of population then that's still only the equivalent of 15 houses a year...not a huge saving.( per hour...so if on standby for 12 hours then this would be 180 houses...would you notice the saving in CO2 emissions?)

I feel the same as the OP.

Its propoganda, the same device used in the 30's by a national socialist government....

NO, you most certainly are not!

It really pisses me off something awful.

As you say, damn brainwashing propaganda......

And what a TOTAL waste of F-ing money that Copenhagen s*h*i*t*e was - Just one big bloody 'Jolly' - - - AT OUR EXPENSE!!!

Ooooooooo, don't get me started! I haven't got my pills with me..... :D

I've dramatically changed my behaviour as a result of the Act on CO2 campaign.

I now rarely drive.

OK it was the snow that did that.

No, you're not alone. Those adverts have the same sort of effect on me as "Baby on Board" signs/stickers in cars.

When I see a "Baby on Board" sign or sticker I am overcome by an urge to drive into the darn thing; When I see these ridiculous adverts I'm minded to turn up the CH thermostat another degree and to set the timer so that it comes on earlier in the morning and goes off later at night.

So far I've managed to restrain myself from driving into a "Baby on Board" car, but have been less successful in restricting my urges regarding my domestic heating system which now runs 24-hours a day, keeping my house at a toasty 23-25c. Actually, I'm feeling a little warm as I type this, so I'm off to change into shorts. Back in a couple of mins...

If you want to avoid the trashy TV ads don't watch TV stations that show them. I can rarely find anything I want to see on any of the ITV stations and hate the ad breaks so - voila - no ads.

If you do want to reduce your CO2 move to the greenest place in the UK. London. Public transport all over the city all day and all night, fast train links to the whole of the UK, high speed trains to the continent. Easy cycling everywhere. Mass sharing of utilities - roads, railways, power, water etc. Always stack of local shops, retaurants, pubs, parks, etc etc in easy walking distance.

I never really tried to pursue a green agenda - I just chose to live somewhere that turns out to be far greener that living in the countryside.

Uhm interesting thought. Can't really argue your reasoning. Never quite thought of London in that way:thumb:

I'll stop using Standby when Government buildings stop being lit up like Christmas trees at night.

Being pedantic ..... you're confusing power with energy.

If you really want to go green get rid of your dog(s) who have a larger carbon footprit than an SUV according to this report. :dk:

Actually mate it would be 18000KWH every hour, so left on standby for 12hours would give 216000KWH which is about what 36 houses use each year. Multiply this figure by 365 and that gives 78840000KWH, assuming that the average household uses 6000KWH/year this equates to the annual usage for 13,140 homes...just me being a pedant:eek:

Me neither. I just hear a report on Radio 4 the other day. They started with New York. I was "New York?? Green?!?" and then the presenter explained why and the penny dropped.

Most of my friends in the country have at least two cars and do stacks of miles etc etc

Our Clio, in comparison, only just clicked past 40,000 miles. And we bought on 34,000 six years ago.....

I believe government information broadcasts are covered under the public service license part of their permission to broadcast over the UK. hence, they are free. The making of them however will be paid for.

There is a regulation which also allows the broadcast of party political issues which again has to be aired for free. The largest opposition party gets one more free then those in power. (The response to the budget)

There is a limit to all of these.

In my view, these broadcasts are not used enough.

You have 3 themes running at present. Stop Smoking, Speep Kills, and this CO2 rubbish.

Explain...please. If an appliance uses 1 watt compared to one using 200watts, is this not a factor of 200 whether energy or power?
