Can someone please explain the differences between active rear suspension and airmatic rear suspension.

I thought I had both systems stored in my head, but I've been made to think differently.

I need two rear airbags for the rear of our s211 and the seller I have been looking at, the right up on parts has made me think differently to what I thought each system was or is.

So, I thought airmatic was an all 4 corner suspension system.

Active suspension was possibly just a rear suspension system.

I also thought active suspension had the button which aloud the vehicle to choose different comforts of ride? I think I may have this information wrong.

Our s211 has rear air suspension, but has no button to raise or lower or adjust the comfort of the suspension, please Tel me what suspension the s211 has. Many thanks.

I've rushed the post, but hope I've explained to which information I need.

Thanks in advance

I've ordered two new rear airbags off the bay. I'm sure they are the correct type for the S211. When putting the vehicle details in the bar at the top, I got the green light. Expecting to receive them Monday coming.

The S212 estate cars have self levelling air suspension which levels itself depending on vehicle load.

I would imagine active suspension alters according to driving mode selected, mine has this although on mine it’s called Agility.

Mind you I’m guessing so someone may be along later to put me right.

S211's and S212's all came with self levelling rear (air) suspension.

Airmatic was an option - that gave you airs struts at the front and active dampers all round. And different modes to select via switches; Comfort & Sport on a 212; those plus Sport II on a 211. And a vehicle raise option on both.

When it get's to 213's it gets confusing. My mate's 2017/18 E300e has what MB UK confusingly call "Air Body Control". Which looks to be Airmatic + active dampers with 5 x modes plus vehicle raise.

Thanks for your knowledge Gents.

I was just after the s211's systems.

When ordering the rear bags on the bay last night. I noticed on the advert it stated not for active rear suspension, but for airmatic suspension. I got confused. I've gone ahead and purchased two new rear airbags.

It also give a chart of which the bags fit. Our vehicle was listed on the correct part for fitment.

I was put off with some of the advert wording. I'm nearly sure I've purchased the correct parts for our vehicle.

I think what is meant via active suspension is. The car adjusts the dampening aspects of the suspension. This is something our 2004 doesn't have. I also used the vin decoder specification sheet and that didn't identify which suspension our vehicle has.

I'm nearly sure airmatic means all four corners of the vehicle has air suspension. I could be wrong. But this is how I kind of remember it being.

Ours has rear self leveling air suspension.

The bags don't seem that difficult in replacing also. Few suspension arms/ bolts to be removed and it's quite straightforward. A 4 poster ramp would certainly make things easier. I think I'll let the Indy sort this out.

Going by the read up and models the parts fit. I think we'll be ok with the parts ordered. 🙄

Airbags fitted spot on. All installed, rear is up and staying up 🤞👍😁. No more cluster fuss 🥳. Driving well is the old tank.
