Adaptive Accelerator?

2007 SL (R230)
I'm a bit of a fanatic about my cars and like to know them inside out. So, having purchased a 2007 SL350 I also managed to get an original brochure and price list from eBay. I noticed in the price list, listed amongst the standard equipment is adaptive accelerator pedal. I can't find mention of this in the owners manual (but might not have found the right section yet) and so wondered if anyone could explain what it means please? What exactly is it adapting to?

I understand adaptive gear box programmes and how they can adapt to your driving style, but an adaptive accelerator is new to me. Is it possible this is why I sometimes feel I have to give it a serious push to get the car to respond? Noticed this particularly on uphill gradients. It's not that the car won't respond, just that it seems to need a lot of movement on the pedal to do so.

Thanks,

Guess this question was either too stupid or too boring for anyone to bother to reply eh? I can't believe no one knows with the collective knowledge here. Anyway, sorry to have bored everyone :)

I've now read all about accelerator/ECU resets (which I'll try but don't hold out a lot of hope) and Sprint Boosters which sound as though they'd give me the accelerator pedal response I'm used to, but I'd be concerned about how it might interfere with other electronics. I've read information mostly in praise of them but a few absolutely scathing reviews and even some people who've apparently wrecked their gear boxes after having them fitted - although on much more powerful cars than mine.

I'll try the reset and see what if anything that does. Probably won't bother to post back on it though as it's apparent no one's really interested. As a first time Mercedes owner and therefore also new to this club, it's very off putting to be ignored. Fortunately, I have a thick skin :)

Regards,

My CLK 430 has a "Fast on" and "Fast off" feature. Maybe it's this??

Thanks for the response :)

Can you explain that a bit more please? Do you mean the quicker you press the pedal, or the quicker you get off it, the quicker the response? In a way that would seem like 'normal' accelerator pedal response to me. I'm still a little puzzled over how the pedal itself can adapt. Gear box shift patterns sure, but the pedal?

Thanks ched999uk... that's the same procedure I've seen described as a Gearbox reset, ECU reset and Accelerator Pedal reset and any combination :)

Appreciate it, thanks.

Accelerator Operation:
Fast on = depressing the accelerator pedal quickly
(not into kickdown position) while driving
continuously, rather than depressing the
accelerator pedal in the usual manner, will cause
the automatic transmission to shift down into a
lower gear. This gear shifting process is
dependent on the current vehicle speed.
Fast off = there will be no upshift when releasing
the accelerator pedal quickly, e.g. using the
engine’s braking power during performance
driving.

The accelerators in all recent MBs are electronic/fly by wire, so have programming which can be influenced by learned patterns of driving over time. It should describe this briefly in the manual. This may have more of an influence in your auto, than it would a manual.
It should re-learn to a new driver, but this may take some time, depending how many miles were racked up with the old driver. The reset procedure will speed up the process of adapting to you.

Thanks for the explanations fellas... I appreciate it all as I really do like to understand my vehicles.

Well, I used the procedure to reset the accelerator/gear box/ECU and then drove the car and have to say it felt like a different vehicle. Much more responsive to accelerator input etc. Hopefully now it will learn my style of driving which will suit me a lot better.

Thanks for all the explanations and advice etc.
