Had a post work discussion last night about state of the world, evils of modern life and the merits or otherwise of Shell Optimax etc. Usual range of views: Nectar of the Gods to Complete Waste of money.

One chap started going on about adaptive ignition systems on his Toyota. Was told by the salesman that it was not just electronic with knock sensors (which just retard the ignition once they sense predetonation) but a newer one where the sytem slowly advances the ignition timing up to a point it is happy with.

So if he wanted to get the full benefit of a premium fuel he would have to stick with the same or similar rated fuel for a while. Putting in lower rated fuel would cause the system to retard back to a "safe" level and it would then have to slowly work forward all over again.

How slowly? Well, for full effect maybe 3,000 miles! That sounds a very long time to me but if correct might explain why some people get no immediate benefit
