hi

the only thing that can let the E300D down is the lack of a turbo.

has anyone on here heard of anyone fitting one - the LHD models did have turbos but they didnt fit them to RHD models because of the steering box i believe getting in the way.

are there any turbo specialists anyone can recommend who maybe could do the work and how much do you reckon such a mod would cost in total?

its just an idea at the moment. i plan to keep my W124 estate indefinatly if i can and the speed of the car (especially as i tow a caravan) is the only thing that lets it down.

cheers for any thoughts - i suspect its a no-goer but thought i'd ask ;)

There was a company that offered kits on the older single cam engine. As far as I know they offered 2 levels of boost. The higher boost kit required a major engine overhall with new pistons, big end shells and oil spray nozzles to cool the undersides of the pistons oil cooler etc etc. The lower boost one was a bolt on kit which mainly improved torque at low revs. I think they gave up manufacturing the kit when the factory turbo diesels came in but they might know of a supply company who continued with the kits?

Dug out the brochure figures for the single cam engines if you are interested. Would be a good indication of what you could get away without major engine modifications?

I have to mention though adding a turbo to an NA engine is a headache. It would be much cheaper to invest in a new car, or the 300TD engine and fit that in.

Interesting this one, have thought the same about my 300d many times :)

I keep meaning to dyno mine just to see what it's got but keep forgetting...

looks like its not worth it then..... i dont want a 210. i love the 124.

cheers for the info - some good stuff there

Hi

Why not a 210????????? I have both and each have their merits. If i am going a run i always take the 210.

I think the lack of RHD turbo was nothing to do with the steering box, more a development and marketing issue, though it's possible a bespoke manifold may be needed to raise the turbo to clear the steering box.

TB Turbos used to offer such a conversion, but unfortunately have ceased trading, but the owners Son is in business offering turbos.

The only real difference between the 606 atmo and charged is the oil cooling jets for the pistons, so an additional oil cooler will definately be required.

Personally I wouldn't look for a bespoke kit but would source a turbo and manifold, fuel pump aneroid and intercooler from a LHD car in Europe.

You will need to have a bespoke exhaust front pipe to clear the steering column.

All Mercedes rust! it is just a matter of controlling the spread of it.

Correct - its just that controlling the spread of it takes a bit more effort on a 210 than a 124 :)

lack of a turbo isnt enough for me to sell the 124. i have nothing against 210 really but prefer the 124.

It was definately the steering box that prevented the turbo being fitted to RHD cars.. Of course im sure they could have found a way around it but then as DM says, cost..

The steering column was also cited as the reason for W210 diesels being Atmo only...well until they decided they could bend the exhaust front pipe round the column.

C250TD still use a steering box and they have a turbo.

TB Turbos definately had a kit for installing to RHD cars.
