Hi Guys

Ive got my old JL Audio XD400/4 which i was going to sell, but turns out if i add this to my car will make a great stage 1 upgrade for my audio 20 system.

Is there a DIY about on how to do this please? Ive fitted all this into my old BMW before so am capable, just need to know where everything is that i need to tap into etc, or is there a harness for this?

Cheers all

Danny

Gizzie please help :) your threads on e90 post inspired me hopefully youve done similiar on the Mercs :)

Just buy a hi level convertor mate and wire it in.

I would buy a quadlock to quadlock convertor so you don't cut into the oem wires, you can then do all the wiring and crimping out of the car to make it easier too.

Take the speaker out into the hi level convertor, then the signal from that into the amp, and then back out into the quadlock convertor to the wires that run back to the speakers.

Or sell me the amp and buy a new one with hi level inputs if it is easier. ;)

I thought you were selling it anyway?

I gave someone from talkaudio a link to your sale thread and he said he was going to buy it.

I had it on ebay and it didnt sell so I figured id fit it. I would still sell it if there is interest :)

Nice to have a back up plan for if ot doesn't sell though :)

Ive seen a thread where someone joined into the loom in the boot to fit the amp would that be the best place?

If you have a audio 20 installed there will be no gateway in the boot like the command systems it will be a stand alone unit with all the amplification in the head unit.
So mounting the amp in the boot would involve either running new speaker cables to each speaker or running 2 sets of cables the length of the car.
I've gone down the Rockford fosgate route using a pbr amp which accepts speaker input and is about the size of 2 cigarette packets so easily hidden

The Rockford amp is a good unit to use. It takes speaker level inputs and is easily hidden away.

The W212 audio units all have speaker connections at the head units so its quite straight forward to hook the amp up and planty of space to mount it with ventilation around it.

Its worth changing the speakers for something decent at the smae time. I recommend a pair of Morel 6.5" components in the front and a pair of 5.25" coaxials in the rear. Sound deaden the doors at the same time and you'll have yourself a very nice sound upgrade.

I am using Morels up front and just the mids at the back, sweet sounding speakers, always sound pretty smooth.

Do you stock the Rockford?

Something like this?

ACV Quadlock Sound Ugrade Channel Converter VW Ford | eBay

Any recommendations on what gear I would be better off using?

Fantastic info thank you, not as easy as i was hoping then with this amp!

Sounds a good amp to hide that size! Where have you mounted yours any photos at all please?

Do they Morels fit easily. None of this USA only sourced adapter plates like on the BMWs?

Don't know on the W212, I never got round to upgrading mine, I am in an ML.

Yes that's the amp I have used

Danny
I have command in my car so its mounted In the boot alongside the nav Dvd player I used the 2 bolt holes attached to the back panel and built a panel out of MDF to fix the amp too so sits behind the carpet all hidden away

If you go with that Rockford amp you dont need any converters at all. It takes speaker level inputs. You can just wire it up!

The Morels will fit the car and make a very good sound upgrade. We have done lots of these conversions especially for CLK's where the results are amazing.

Good day all,

Alfie you mentioned that with Rockford amp we converter is not needed. I never done amp install before and don't want to mess up anything. Wanted to ask- do I need anything else then actual amp before installing it? Any harness or extra cabling required to hook up Rockford amp with unit? How amp and unit will be connected to each other?
