The longest day and the longest grass seem to coincide on the narrow single track road leading to my home village. The visibility is currently very poor especially on a series of bends within a mile of my house where the chance of having a head on is remote but very real. Last night it happened. I was being very cautious, but had to jump on the brakes when I spotted an on coming car.
Within a few milliseconds I was stationary having been accompanied not by the squeal of tyres, but by the whirring of various devices as my seatbelt was tightened, set moved and roof closed. I experienced Pre-safe for the first time triggered by a combination of the rate of application and pressure to the brake pedal. I had selected reverse and was backing towards a passing place before the other car had come to rest, with all the adjustments restored to normal.
The new S class has been criticised for being a computer with wheels, but I for one appreciate the efforts of technology and Mercedes to keep me safe. I am very happy to know that my car shares the same self preservation instinct as I do. It is amazing what humans can do in the face of danger fuelled by adrenaline and it’s quite surprising what a modern Mercedes can do too!:D

So you've now tested most of the toys on your car, lets hope you never test the remaining ones....
Nice to hear it worked well.

Thanks for sharing.

I'm all for computers when it helps keep me and my family safe.

Having practiced some emergency procedures in a GL420 CDi on a track, it's incredible to see, hear, and feel all the systems the car had to offer kicking in to preserve the well being of it's occupants.
