I am strangely drawn to a 280CE that's up for private sale in my street but I am new to the prospect of Mercedes ownership and not sure what I should be looking out for. I am viewing the car properly tomorrow evening so any advice I can get before then would be most gratefully received.
What I know so far:
I'm told it's a 1980 model, originally registered in Singapore and re-registered in the UK (with an unhelpful 90s plate). On cursory examination the bodywork looks pretty spotless, possibly some rust around the sunroof, although I haven't had a chance to look properly. A slight deformation in one of the mini rear light bumpers. Other than that it looks good. The clock reads about 225,000km.
The owner claims he's had offers but none that he's happy with. He's advertising it for £1,500.
What I'm after is a general impression about whether this is a fair price point and what sort of things I should be looking for if I'm to take this forward seriously. Note that I'm unlikely ever to become a serious enthusiast and I'm not particulalry looking to shop around for anything else. This is basically a bit of an impulse because it looks like a lovely motor and I think it would be a lot of fun.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
