It is not Mercedes related but just wanted some advice on the below as there are some mechanics on the forum who can help.

We had a camblet change carried out on our 2003 Honda Civic. It is recommened to be changed every 8yrs so we had it done even though the car is low mileage. Before the change the car ran fine, egine ran fine and smooth with no unusual noises. The waterpump wasnt changed at the same time and we werent advised to do it.

After we got the car back it was making some funny noises, mainly a whining sound and what sounded like a bubbling noise at idle but the car otherwise ran fine. It has been back to the garage who changed the cambelt and they are saying the waterpump needs changing.

1. Can a cambelt change or improper cambelt change cause a waterpump to fail?

2. If the waterpump had failed would the engine not overheat? The car was not overheating after the cambelt change.

3. Is it possible the waterpump failure may have caused other damage?

Thanks.

An overtight fanbelt can knacker a bearing, though it is probably more likely that it was worn and the new belt correctly tensioned pushed it over the edge. Is the waterpump driven by the cambelt?

Is it possible that the noises are due to air locks in the cooling system?

Also, I don't know if the header tank is near enough to the pump, but sometimes you can see the coolant swirling around in there when you rev the engine up. If you can see that happening, then the pump is still working!

I have heard of water pumps failing shortly after a cambelt change several times before.
